This Sunday
Sunday, September 15
14th Sunday after Pentecost
Preacher: Rev. Laura Merrill
Scripture: John 6:41-42, 66-69

Rev. Merrill is an ordained elder in the Rio Texas Conference. Having served churches throughout the conference, she is now appointed as the Assistant to the Bishop. In June, she was elected to lead the Rio Texas delegation to the 2020 General Conference in Minneapolis, MN. In addition, Rev. Merrill has a long-time FUMC connection: she is the granddaughter of beloved FUMC Associate Pastor, Bruno Schmidt, one of the two people for whom our Family Life Center is named.

Thank you, FUMC Austin!
With grateful hearts, the Joy Circle gives thanks for your generosity in contributing children's underwear to our annual Underwear Drive for the Southside Community Center in San Marcos (a UMW National Mission Institution) which netted three large plastic bins of packaged underwear to be used by San Marcos ISD nurses throughout the school year. Know that you helped make a child's school experience more comfortable and less challenging.
Cheers Potluck
Thursday, September 19, 6:30-9:00 p.m.
FLC Garrison Chapel
Our Cheers Ministry, a community for those young-at-heart who are recently retired, semi-retired, or thinking about setting a date to retire, is having a potluck dinner. Cheers will provide the chicken and you can bring your favorite side or dessert. Debbie Shaw has a video for us, “Dance Hall Divas”—how to tap dance your way to youth and joy. We may have time for board games, too!

Weightlifting, Dancing and Handbells
Handbell ringers are weight lifters. We can swing dance with the best and not break the stained glass windows. Ringers are challenged with anywhere from 2 to 8 bells. Our joy is lifted and spread throughout the Sanctuary every time we make music. In the end, it is the feeling of family. Love. Sharing our joys, sorrows, frustrations, but most of all our relationships with God. Come and meet us between and after services on Musical Celebration Sunday, September 22.

Hospitality Helpers Needed
Want to help provide hospitality during the Lifetouch Photo Sessions? Consider volunteering for a two-hour shift. Various volunteer opportunities exist assisting with sign up and as greeters/hosts. Volunteers are essential in order to facilitate this process and volunteering is a great way to meet and learn the names of those you do not yet know.

NAMI Walks
Saturday, September 28, 9:00-11:00 a.m.
The Long Center
Walk with the FUMC team to raise awareness of mental illness and raise funds for NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness. FUMC is working to support NAMI to promote education and awareness to end the stigma associated with mental illness. Donate or walk with us.

Mercy & Justice Fifth Sunday Presentation
Sunday, September 29, 10:00-10:45 a.m.
SAN Wesley Hall
We welcome Jennifer Long, Executive Director of Casa Marianella, the only shelter in Austin dedicated solely to immigrants. FUMC was one of the founding congregations of Casa Marianella back in 1986. Jennifer Long will update us on their work, how they are being challenged by current immigration policies, and offer ways we can support their work.

FEAST
Sunday, September 29, 6:00-7:30 p.m.
FLC Garrison Chapel
FEAST is a new kind of dinner church program that aims to build bridges among young adults from different churches and even different denominations in the Austin area. These meetings focus on creating meaningful and personal interactions among individuals seeking more connection and engagement in a faith-interested atmosphere. Join us to FEAST on the Spirit, on Scripture, on good food, and on great conversation.

September Mission Emphasis
Global Mission Fellows
In Michigan, Global Mission Fellows actively work with the local community to assess the needs and organize neighborhood gardens, to provide fruit and vegetables to food-insecure neighbors. In Zimbabwe, Global Mission Fellows partner with the community to coordinate, design, and monitor health programs, including maternal and child health, malaria prevention, and HIV/AIDS education. At First Church, we contribute during the month of September to make the life-changing work of young adult Global Mission Fellows possible. Gifts can be left at the altar rail, in the offering plate, or at the church office, marked "GM Fellows."
