Scott Davis Update
We want to keep you updated on the ongoing recovery of Scott Davis, our Organist and Music Director. At this time, he continues to be treated in the hospital. In the near future, we anticipate his transition out of the hospital to a rehab facility. Recovering from a brain injury can take quite awhile, so we anticipate that Scott will be away for an extended period of time. As there are significant updates, we will keep you informed. Thank you for your prayers and love notes to Scott—he takes great joy from them and from each of you. We will continue to collect cards on Sunday mornings, or you may mail them to the church office.
Safe Gatherings Certifications
Do you still need to be safety certified? If you're not already, but you want to work in ministry with children, youth, or vulnerable adults, then the answer is yes! This includes Sunday School, mission trips, care ministries, and chaperoning/driving. Parents of children and youth are highly encouraged to get certified. The church covers the cost, but our cost is going up 50% in January, so now's the time to do it. Visit our Conference Safety webpage to find out how, or contact Safety Policy Administrator Emily Buchanan at emily@fumcaustin.org .

Have you ever heard of speed dating? We're shaking it up and inviting parents of littles to join us for a night of food, fun, and speed friending! This is a great way to get acquainted with the awesome community of families at FUMC. You might even find a "match" for future play dates! Dinner is provided at $10 per person. Childcare (with pizza) is provided free with registration.

Welcome Rev. Laura Merrill as Guest Preacher
On September 15, join us for worship as we hear the Word preached by Reverend Laura Merrill. Rev. Merrill is an ordained elder in the Rio Texas Conference. Having served churches throughout the conference, she is now appointed as the Assistant to the Bishop. In June, she was elected to lead the Rio Texas delegation to the 2020 General Conference in Minneapolis, MN. In addition, Rev. Merrill has a long-time FUMC connection: she is the granddaughter of beloved FUMC Associate Pastor, Bruno Schmidt, one of the two people for whom our Family Life Center is named.
Celebration of the Wedding Ring Class
Sunday, September 15, 10:00 a.m., FLC Garrison Chapel
The Wedding Ring class has planted seeds, and watered them, and all of us are able to enjoy the garden because of them. Join us as we celebrate all that they have done for us! We will sing, we will pray, and we will praise God for the gift this class has been for FUMC Austin.
Lunch & Learn: International Justice Mission
September 15, 12:15 p.m., SAN Wesley Hall
Thais and Doug Kilday (brother of church member Dan Kilday) will share their story from a year-long mission trip to Cambodia with IJM, a global organization that protects the poor from violence throughout the developing world. IJM partners with local authorities to rescue victims of violence, bring criminals to justice, restore survivors, and strengthen justice systems. Join us for lunch while we hear the ways God was at work in and through the Kilday family. Lunch from Jason’s Deli (suggested donation of $10) will be provided only with registration. For more information, contact Pastor Cathy Stone at cathy@fumcaustin.org or 512-478-5684 (ext. 215).

Engage Kickoff & Youth Parent Meeting
Sunday, September 15, 4:30-7:00 p.m., FLC Garrison Chapel
Youth are invited on Sunday nights to dig deeper through fellowship, study, and prayer. We will engage our whole selves in discussion, prayer, and worship…plus a whole lot of fun! Engage for Youth meets each week from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Family Life Center.

During our Engage Kickoff, we'll have our Fall Parent Meeting. We'll go over all the information and forms for the new school year! Take a look at all the opportunities for the youth through Spring 2020 and hear feedback from one another! Dinner will be provided and we hope you can make it!
Cheers Potluck
Thursday, September 19, 6:30-9:00 p.m.
FLC Garrison Chapel
Our Cheers Ministry, a community for those young-at-heart who are recently retired, semi-retired, or thinking about setting a date to retire, is having a potluck dinner. Cheers will provide the chicken and you can bring your favorite side or dessert. Debbie Shaw has a video for us, “Dance Hall Divas”—how to tap dance your way to youth and joy. We may have time for board games, too!

Mercy & Justice Fifth Sunday Presentation
Sunday, September 29, 10:00-10:45 a.m.

We welcome Jennifer Long, Executive Director of Casa Marianella, the only shelter in Austin dedicated solely to immigrants. FUMC was one of the founding congregations of Casa Marianella back in 1986. Jennifer Long will update us on their work, how they are being challenged by current immigration policies, and offer ways we can support their work.

FEAST
Sunday, September 29, 6:00-7:30 p.m.
FLC Garrison Chapel
FEAST is a new kind of dinner church program that aims to build bridges among young adults from different churches and even different denominations in the Austin area. These meetings focus on creating meaningful and personal interactions among individuals seeking more connection and engagement in a faith-interested atmosphere. Join us to FEAST on the Spirit, on Scripture, on good food, and on great conversation.

September Mission Emphasis
Global Mission Fellows
In Michigan, Global Mission Fellows actively work with the local community to assess the needs and organize neighborhood gardens, to provide fruit and vegetables to food-insecure neighbors. In Zimbabwe, Global Mission Fellows partner with the community to coordinate, design, and monitor health programs, including maternal and child health, malaria prevention, and HIV/AIDS education. At First Church, we contribute during the month of September to make the life-changing work of young adult Global Mission Fellows possible. Gifts can be left at the altar rail, in the offering plate, or at the church office, marked "GM Fellows."
