A lot to Take In, & a lot to Report
|
|
Having just returned from Cambridge, Massachusetts, where the inaugural SAJS took place, notebook crammed, photo library stuffed, and back at the news desk with a much more serious view of the event topics, we will begin our reviews starting next week.
Yes, while there were presentations on sustainability and climate change, carbon footprints, sanctions and responsible sourcing, standards and certifications, trust, green washing, renewables, energy costs and supply chains, and more, there seemed to be a common thread throughout, and some suggestions as to what we should be doing to save the planet, save the global population, and save our industry - all interconnected.
As it was pointed out, industry standards are changing in line with consumer’s behaviors, towards a more sustainable and equitable Jewelry industry. But are we doing enough in the right directions?
We shall dive into all of the presentations, report back on what this all means to our industry, as well as to you and your business. This may end up with more questions than answers, but we all need to be thinking about it.
Thank you to the Responsible Jewelry Council (RJC), the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the Mineralogical and Geological Museum at Harvard University (MGMH) for the invitation to attend and cover the event.
We'll see you all back here next week for our first report.

When "Crystal" was Crystal
Upcoming Auction - Crystal Candlesticks and more
|
|
Gary Roskin -
Roskin Gem News Report -
Coming up in Christie’s July 7 London auction, you will find a pair of Leopold Henry Radclyffe carved rock crystal and silver-gilt candlesticks.
They’re estimated to sell between 4,000 and 6,000 pounds.
Why are these so important?
Rock crystal can be such an underappreciated gem material, with all of the other gem materials available today.
But back in the day, rock crystal was seen as an important ornamental object, especially as items for houses of worship as well as the homes (and palaces) of the very wealthy.
|
|
Along with the rock crystal candlesticks, there is a King George III jeweled and enameled medallion, from 1789. The topper crown is set with diamonds, rubies and emeralds.
King George III is THE King George named in the American Declaration of Independence. Yes, THAT King George.
We had a chance to speak with Harry Williams-Bulkeley, International Head of Silver Department, Christie’s London, regarding the medallion, and he told us that the large red "gems" beneath the right and left arches are in fact ....

Yogi's Rings Presumed Melted
Hall of Famer's Jewels Stolen and Destroyed?
SAY IT AIN'T SO!😲
|
|
Gary Roskin -
Roskin Gem News Report -
After almost 2 decades of searching for stolen artwork, jewelry, and other museum items, 9 thieves have been caught, according to the Associated Press.
But what really caught our attention to this story were the World Series and Most Valuable Player rings stolen, and presumably melted down for the gold value! Say it ain't so, Joe!
These rings were more than just gold and diamonds.
They were presented to Hall of Fame New York Yankees baseball catcher, Yankees manager, and New York Mets coach and manager, Yogi Berra. These rings have value not just from the gold and diamonds, but for their provenance.
They belonged to Yogi Berra, a baseball icon, and an American icon!
Who is Yogi Berra?
You may not know Yogi Berra, but you know his "Yogi-isms."
Including the Top Ten list of Yogi-isms, according to ESPN.

Bathing in Gems - Literally?
Cosmetics Line "Gemology" is now in Hospitality
|
|
Gary Roskin -
Roskin Gem News Report -
No doubt the name of the company has grabbed our attention. And so what exactly do they have to do with gemstones and gemology?
According to the Gemology Cosmetics Paris website, they use minerals found in gem materials for creating luxury cosmetics. “Thanks to sophisticated liquefaction technics for minerals, Gemology extracts the trace elements, naturally concentrated in gemstones, to blend them into its skincare products. The action of these precious minerals pass on proven effectiveness to Gemology products.”
We have no doubt that gems have what it takes to help us feel and look better. But did we think to extract the trace elements to make cosmetics?
