My jewelry is my own answer to that struggle, which ultimately is not about seeking balance, but about embracing uncertainties and opposites."

Surface Matters: Grit or Gloss
We are still accepting entries to the
Surface Matters: Grit or Gloss
exhibition! The deadline under a week away, March 31, 2020, so be sure to get your pieces submitted!
We have added new venues for the exhibition as well. As you already know, the exhibition will travel to the University of Arkansas - Little Rock during the summer. It will continue to Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA before reaching its final destination at Millersville University in Millersville, PA. The information for the submitted pieces and applications can be found below.

Artists may submit up to two entries. Submitted work must have been completed in the last two years and not have been accepted into previous Enamelist Society exhibitions. Students may be enrolled in ANY academic institution, art center, craft program, individual studio education program, or self-taught. For this exhibition, a student must have less than 4 years' experience in enameling, must not regularly sell their work, or be represented in/by a gallery. The deadline for submissions is 11:59:59 PM EST, March 31, 2020. Artists with accepted pieces will be notified by the end of April 2020.
The jurors for this exhibition will be Charity Hall, Anne Havel, and Barbara McFadyen.

Master Metalsmith

My initial plan was to look over Sarah Perkins'
Master Metalsmith
exhibition at the Metal Museum in Memphis as a whole and then go back and discuss a few of my favorite pieces. But after walking into the first-floor gallery I knew that would be difficult. Upon entering the upstairs gallery, I was sure it would be impossible. In fact, the notion of singling out a couple of pieces seemed untenable, even inappropriate. The beauty, brilliance, the overwhelming creativity and diversity of over 100 objects was hard to take in.
The evidence of superlative technical skill and the delight in physical interaction with material was impressive enough. But the attention to detail, nuance and subtlety of form, color and pattern was hard to comprehend, even for someone familiar with the processes used in the making. Many artists can impress with a few works, but to sustain the level of accomplishment displayed in this exhibit renews my faith in the human spirit.
The idea of choosing a couple of favorite examples seemed absurd since each vessel held features upon which to marvel, such as subtle variations of color, intensity, pattern and texture. Each form, like people in a room, displayed distinct personalities and physical traits. Each was an individual and it seemed disrespectful to isolate a few.

On behalf of The Enamelist Society, Inc. we offer our hopes for continued health and safety for everyone in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. Sharing in this global situation, we all are in this fight together and The Enamelist Society, Inc. will continue to support our membership through this challenging time. While our first priority is the safety of our members and staff, we are still working on our communications, exhibitions planning, workshops logistics and overall business of the Society. We are continuing almost normal services during this time, but we are generally working from home. We did postpone our TES Board of Trustees meeting scheduled for March 28 & 29.
