Bending the Arc

Sunday, February 11, 2024 at 10:15am

Rev. Parisa Parsa

"I do not pretend to understand the moral universe; the arc is a long one, my eye reaches but little ways; I cannot calculate the curve and complete the figure by the experience of sight; I can divine it by conscience. And from what I see I am sure it bends toward justice."

These words from Unitarian minister and theologian Theodore Parker in 1853 have taken on new life in their more succinct form paraphrased by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ("The moral arc of the universe is long, but I believe it bends toward justice.") How do we calculate the curve and complete the figure of the arc, when so many well-intentioned folks have gone astray? What guides us in the work of creating justice, and what can keep us humble?

Musical Musings

By Anne Watson Born

This month’s worship theme is Justice and Equity. As we consider how to work for justice, there is one simple act you can do: support the UU Urban Ministry by attending the FUUSN Musicians Concert this Sunday, February 11. The concert is a benefit for the UUUM, an organization which has been actively working for justice since its inception.

The UU Urban Ministry Mission: We work across race and place to dismantle racism and white supremacy culture and to advance racial, social, and economic justice.

Our Vision: We envision a Greater Boston where all people live with freedom and dignity, and have equitable access to resources and opportunity to shape the present and the future.

Your fellow FUUSNites have been working hard to bring you beautiful, exciting, and engaging performances of a wide variety of music. You’ll hear Bach Inventions on guitars, part of a Beethoven cello sonata, a Rachmaninoff prelude, two wildly contrasting a cappella pieces, and Lois Shapiro playing Brahms. After our traditional Cookies at Intermission, the FUUSN Band will play music by U2, Pat Metheny, and Karla Bonoff, along with other contemporary tunes. You will not want to miss the closing number!

The concert begins at 2pm in the Sanctuary and with the intermission it will last around 90 minutes. A free will offering will be taken to support the work of the Urban Ministry. Please show up for justice and support our wonderful musicians!
