Dear FWHS Community,

Summer has brought a brutal heat to Fort Worth. As we look forward to the cooler days ahead, we want to update you on some of what FWHS has been up to these past few months.

In June, we broke ground on Hughes House, the next housing community in the Stop Six Choice Neighborhood Initiative. Thank you to our partners and the community for coming out to celebrate this development and the great man it is named for.

As always, we love to share client success stories. We're excited to share the story of Pala Oyema, a proud new homeowner.

Also, it's back-to-school season! From providing school supplies to awarding scholarships, we've been working to ensure students are ready to succeed this year.

Lastly, our 85th Anniversary Breakfast is quickly approaching. We hope to see each of you there!

As we head into fall, we send each of you our gratitude for your continued partnership with FWHS. We know that our success comes from each of our valued community partnerships.

Wishing you the best,

The Fort Worth Housing Solutions Team

Hughes House Groundbreaking

In June, FWHS and our partners officially broke ground on Hughes House, the next mixed-use development in the Stop Six Choice Neighborhood Initiative. We are thrilled to see the construction progress on this housing community, and we can't wait to join everyone for a grand opening.

Watch a video showing the most up-to-date renderings of Hughes House here, or click above to watch our short recap video!

We also were recently approved by the Governing Board of the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs for a competitive tax credit to aid in the development of Babers Manor, the next mixed-income family community in the Stop Six Choice Neighborhood Initiative. You can read more about this tax credit approval and the future of Babers Manor here.

FWHS Client Spotlight: Pala Oyema

This quarter, we are honored to get to share Pala Oyema's story. Through her hard work and collaboration with Fort Worth Housing Solutions and Urban Strategies, Inc., Ms. Oyema became a homeowner earlier this year.

She was able to improve her credit score, save for a down payment and purchase a brand-new home within the course of just six months. She now lives in the north side of Fort Worth with her two sons (age 9 and 11) who started school in August.

Check out the video below highlighting Ms. Oyema and her journey to homeownership. Congratulations again, Pala! We cannot wait to see what you do next.

Preparing for Back-to-School

With the school year starting back up, FWHS has been hard at work to make sure Fort Worth-area students are ready to start their year off on the right foot.

In the past few weeks, we had several back-to-school events in which we were able to provide residents with backpacks, school supplies and resources to help them succeed throughout the school year.

We also recently had a reception in honor of this year's Barbara Holston Education Fund scholarship awardees. Each of them are continuing their education in pursuit of associate and/or bachelor's degrees. We wish them the best of luck in their classes this semester and beyond!

FWHS 85th Anniversary Breakfast

Founded in 1938, Fort Worth Housing Solutions has spent the last 85 years providing Fort Worth with affordable housing opportunities. In celebration of our agency's history, we will be hosting an 85th Anniversary Breakfast on November 2, 2023 at 7:30 a.m. Proceeds of the event will go toward the Barbara Holston Education Fund. Table sponsorships and individual tickets can be purchased at the following link: bit.ly/fwhs85thanniversary

We look forward to celebrating with our community partners this fall!

Fort Worth Housing Solution In the News

This newsletter is just a taste of what FWHS has been up to in the past few months. Below are links to articles from local news outlets detailing some other projects and events we've been working on recently:

  • Closing the Senior Housing Gap: Senior community members are a core demographic in need of affordable housing solutions. Brain Dennison, FWHS' Senior VP of Development and Asset Management, recently sat down with Sandra Sadek from the Forth Worth Report to discuss this issue and what we are doing to address this need in our community.

  • Named for Legendary Fort Worth Basketball Coach: As mentioned above, we recently broke ground on Hughes House in Stop Six. The upcoming apartments and mixed-use community is named after Coach Robert Hughes from Dunbar High School. Click the link to read more about the event from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Employment Services

Stay on the lookout for job fairs, employment workshops and more! We post details about these events regularly on our social media channels. Here are some upcoming events to check out:

  • Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2023 at 6 p.m. | Community Meeting at Stallion Pointe Apartments with special guest Detra Whitmore. Info about transportation options will be provided to help residents without reliable transportation in Everman, Crowley and surrounding areas who are seeking employment.

Help for Homeless Residents of Fort Worth

For individuals or families needing housing assistance through Special Programs, referrals are made through a coordinated entry process with TCHC (Tarrant County Homeless Coalition). The TCHC homeless helpline is 817-996-8800 and the website is www.ahomewithhope.org. The agency allows clients to select where they want to live. Housing Counselors are able to help clients search apartments through admission software that allows landlords to list properties.
