Dear FWHS Community,

As the temperatures have cooled and the leafs are falling around Fort Worth, let's all enjoy this holiday season with family and friends while remembering our blessings. As we looking forward to 2024, we want to update you on the happenings at FWHS over these last few months.

In November, we celebrated the grand opening of Cowan Place Senior Living, the first housing community in the Stop Six Choice Neighborhood Initiative. Much thanks to the community and our partners for being part of a historic day in Stop Six.

We also celebrated our 85th Anniversary Breakfast, which raised more than $100,000 for the Barbara Holston Educational Fund. The BHEF awards scholarships that make a difference in the lives for students in FWHS programs.

FWHS was proud to share National Night Out with residents at our properties across the city. The yearly campaign promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.

And finally, we wanted to share a wonderful program from our friends at Tarrant County College for those seeking a career in property maintenance.

As we head into the New Year, we send each of you our gratitude for your commitment and willingness to work together. Any successes we celebrate at FWHS begin with our valued community partnerships.

Stop Six residents, government leaders, developers and community partners celebrated the grand opening Cowan Place Senior Living in November. The mixed-income community launches an exciting new phase of residential housing as part of the Stop Six Choice Neighborhood Initiative.

Former Cavile Place residents who relocated as part of the redevelopment process have the right to return to the community as new FWHS properties come online, such as Cowan Place and Hughes House, which broke ground earlier this year.

“Cowan Place Senior Living would not have been possible without true community collaboration from Stop Six and our committed partners,” said Mary-Margaret Lemons, Fort Worth Housing Solutions president. “We’re excited to welcome new and former Cavile residents to a development they can call home.”

Thank you again to our sponsors, community partners, elected officials, staff and others who helped us celebrate our 85th anniversary. It was a joy to commemorate such a milestone for our agency with all of you. We are looking forward to continuing to change the face of affordable housing with all of you for the next 85 years!

The 85th Anniversary Breakfast brought in over $100,000 for the Barbara Holston Education Fund, which helps our residents and program participants seek higher education. We are thankful beyond words for the impact these funds will have on future award recipients.

We were so happy to see our residents, partners and property staffs enjoying another wonderful National Night Out! What a special evening spending time with so many on a beautiful night in Fort Worth!

National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. It also provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

This newsletter is just a taste of what FWHS has been up to in the past few months. Below are links to articles from local news outlets detailing some other projects and events we've been working on recently:

• "Coats for Kids" event: More than 200 families showed up at Sunrise-McMillan Elementary School to select free coats for their children in grades pre-kindergarten through 12. The Dec. 2 event was also a fun day featuring local vendors, bounce houses, and photos with Santa.

• Cowan Place welcomes home seniors: Bringing hope for the future of the neighborhood, Cowan Place Senior Living is the culmination of six years of work to develop the property FWHS purchased years before receiving the $35 million grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to implement the initiative.

• Butler Place is a gem for Fort Worth: Fort Worth’s oldest public housing complex is intended to be a "catalytic development for downtown" that will honor the past and be a cultural hub in the future.

Fort Worth Housing Solutions currently has limited in-office appointments due to office construction. The Housing Choice Voucher staff will be working remotely and will instead be available to clients via email and phone.

In the event of emergencies, in-office appointments can be scheduled on a limited basis. The office lobby will be open for dropping off documents only. We regret any inconvenience this may cause. Fort Worth Housing Solutions anticipates returning to normal in-person business operations January 15, 2024.
