REMEMBERING LYNN RUNNELLS Story Hour, THIS Sunday, Sept. 22 after Coffee Hour Those of us who knew and loved Lynn Runnells will gather to share a story of her love in the world. Bring a bag lunch and join us!!

ALSO: On Sunday, October 20, after coffee hour, we will gather to make a shrine in Lynn's honor (making shrines was a gift she gave to this congregation). On All Saints Day, November 3, we will display her shrine along with other shrines and photos you bring to honor the saints in your life. 

Next summer, a memorial service will be held to celebrate Lynn's life.

Knitting Group Starting

The Village Fair is Coming!

Plans are well underway for our annual fair on Saturday November 23rd, and you can expect to get a call to find out how you might like to participate. But if you'd like to have some fun right now, consider joining us at 10:00 on Monday morning September 23rd for pine cone waxing, or October 7th for dog treat baking. Something for everyone!

Back To School Interestingly, Hunger Action Month coincides with back-to-school time. Now the kids are back in school, healthy food is essential in helping them to succeed. Healthy snacks during the day are as important as meals in keeping up their energy during the school day. This week, the following would be most appreciated by The Open Door: granola bars, crackers, and breakfast bars are good snacks. Other items to bring on Sunday include: oatmeal, healthy cereal, flavored rice, and bread mixes. Let's keep the children of Gloucester healthy, happy, and safe. Thank you.

Music Notes

The texts, or subjects, used in church music can vary widely. The most common themes are Jesus, love, feeding the poor, and praising God. However, have you ever heard a choir piece about dragons? Yes, DRAGONS! The title of Sunday’s choir anthem is Where Once There Lay Dragons. No, we won’t be singing about the dragon on The Lord of the Rings and won’t be singing about How to Train Your Dragon, but will be singing the King James Version text of Isaiah 35:1-10, composed by Kenton Coe. The beginning of this piece uses the medieval imagery of the land that was thought inhabited by dragons, a desolate land turned into a green pathway, a desert turned into a flowing spring. This piece reminds me of times in our lives that are dry and hopeless, but with God’s love and intervention, are turned into wellsprings of hope and love.

Kenton Coe studied with Paul Hindemith and Nadia Boulanger. He is the first American to have an opera (South, from the play by Julien Green) produced by the Paris Opera. His opera "Rachel" was produced in Nashville and Knoxville by the Knoxville Opera. His opera "Le Grand Siècle" (on a text of Ionesco) was produced by the Opera of Nantes. Coe writes in almost every format: orchestral, choral, and chamber music. He has written the scores for all the Ross Spears documentaries, including Agee, which was nominated for an Academy Award. He wrote the score for Universal's Birds In Peru starring Jean Seberg and directed by Romain Gary. His music has been performed by major symphony orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. His suite for jazz trio and symphony Purcellular was commissioned by the City of London-Westminster for the Purcell Tercentenary. After living a number of years in Paris and New York, he now resides in South Carolina.

Conservation, New England Style: The Cape Ann Story Join us for a presentation by Dan McKanan Sunday, Sept. 22, 2-4 pm, Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church, 10 Church St, Gloucester

For nearly two centuries, Massachusetts has led the nation with a distinct approach to wild space conservation. Rather than focusing only on pristine wildernesses that are far away, Bay Staters have worked to foster greater biodiversity in the ordinary places where we work, live, and play. This vision led residents of Massachusetts to create the first state parks and the first conservation land trusts in the 1890s. In this presentation, Dan McKanan will explore the spiritual roots of their vision, and the ways that vision was enacted on Cape Ann, and will include local panelists. Prashan De Visser, President and Founder of Global Unites, Youth Movement for Conflict Transformation, to speak at Gordon College, Wednesday Sept. 25, event begins at 5pm.

Prashan de Visser, a 2008 graduate of Gordon College, started the Sri Lanka Unites youth movement to stand against violence, hate, and prejudice as well as looking for an equal Sri Lankan identity. This peace movement captured the hearts and minds of international diplomats resulting in a global offshoot and sister organization in 2014, Global Unites. On Sept. 25, Prashan will visit Gordon College for an event with a 5:00 meet and greet/book signing, (you can buy his book Phoenix Generation ahead). CARBON SEQUESTRATION On Sunday, Oct. 6 at 3pm at the Annisquam Village Church, Andrew Brousseau, co-founder of Black Earth Compost, will explain how compost helps sequester C02 (carbon) from the atmosphere by nourishing your soil and plants, which fixes CO2 into stable forms stored in the soil long term. He will also discuss a plan for carbon sinks and food security in Massachusetts by choosing compost. Brought to you by the Interfaith Committee of the Cape Ann Climate Coalition. The Cape Ann Climate Future Film Festival will take place at the at the Gloucester Stage Company, at 267 East Main Street on Saturday, October 5. Doors open at 2:00 p.m. for a light reception catered by Meat & Sweet, featuring local barbecue and dessert favorites. The program runs from 3:00 to 5:00 and will include a series of ten short films from four continents, which “explore the artistic and human response to climate change,” as noted by the festival’s producers. There will be a community discussion of the films at the end of the screening. We anticipate vigorous conversation following the films. Tickets are $20 each. Science Training Encouraging Peace

Sunday, Sept. 22nd at 3 p.m. at the AVC - the Annisquam Village Church and Temple Ahavat Achim welcome Dr. Allen Taylor and Kim Kronenberg to share the remarkable story of the STEP (Science Training Encouraging Peace) program, which brings Israeli and Palestinian scientists together to work in pairs. And don't forget about helping provide lunches for the Action Shelter so people can have something to eat on Sundays!
