Four Candidates Approved for Ordination
|
|
At a called meeting on August 7, Presbytery of the James approved four candidates for ordination as ministers of Word and Sacrament.
- Alexander Fischer was ordained by Coastal Carolina Presbytery and has begun to serve as resident pastor at Richmond Second. He will lead the Ukirk Ministry at Virginia Commonwealth University.
- Candidate David Frost, of Presbytery of the James, will serve Swift Creek Church. His ordination and installation is scheduled for Saturday, September 22 at 4:00 p.m.
- Sandra Goehring, a candidate from Northern Plains Presbytery, was approved for ordination as pastor of Louisa Church.
- Lauren Voyles, of East Tennessee Presbytery, was examined for ordination to serve as a second year chaplain resident at Mary Washington Hospital.

Necrology Reports Due September 24
|
|
During the Communion service at the October presbytery meeting, General Presbyter and Stated Clerk Carson Rhyne will read the names of ministers and ruling elders who have passed away in the last twelve months.
Please send the names of ruling elders for your congregation to be included in this recognition. Include those who had been ordained as ruling elders, whether or not they were serving on the session in the past year, who passed away between September 1, 2017 and August 31, 2018.

|
|
New to serving your church as clerk of session and looking for guidance? In a training workshop just for clerks of session, learn responsibilities as put forth in the Constitution of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and other duties you might be asked to perform.
General Presbyter/Stated Clerk Carson Rhyne will cover duties of clerks such as:
- Minutes
- Rolls
- Annual reports
- Agendas for meetings
He also will present information on historical principles of church order, Presbyterian principles, and parliamentary procedures.

SDOP Purpose Group To Tackle Poverty
|
|
Poverty is a major challenge for communities and the nation, but it is not an inevitable reality. POJ's Self-Development of People (SDOP) Purpose Group is planning works
hops to help local organizations learn effective actions and strategies for alleviating poverty. Rev. Jimmie R. Hawkins, director of the Presbyterian Office of Public Witness, will headline a convocation on the evening Friday, October 12. At workshops the following day, participants will develop skills in advocacy, organizing, and grant writing.

Rhyne Polity Fund Accepting Contributions
|
|
Contribute to the Rhyne Polity Education Fund to support the education of future seminary students in the Presbyterian form of government. This fund was established by Presbytery of the James to recognize the commitment of Carson Rhyne to the church and our presbytery in honor of his impending retirement.
