FABFEST SPECIAL GUESTS

Gregg Bissonette

Just a regular, down-to-earth guy who also happens to be a GRAMMY® Award-winning drummer who plays drums for the most celebrated musicians, directors, and producers of our time: Ringo Starr, David Lee Roth, Maynard Ferguson, Don Henley, Santana, Ray Charles, and many others. Gregg was voted best all-around drummer in the 2023 Modern Drummer Reader’s Poll.

Bruce Spizer

A "taxman" by day, Bruce is a "paperback writer" by night, an author of numerous critically acclaimed books about the Beatles that tell the fascinating and sometimes convoluted stories behind the Beatles vinyl releases. He's consulted on several Beatles projects for Capitol Records, EMI, Universal Music Group and Apple Corps, Ltd., and his articles are featured regularly in magazines such as Beatlefan and Goldemine.

Gary Astridge

Historian, author, speaker, curator, drummer, and leading expert on Ringo Starr's Beatles-era drum kits and gear, Gary collaborated with Ringo Starr on the book "Beats & Threads: Drumming Legend and Fashion Icon, Ringo Starr". Festival attendees can buy an autographed copy and explore Ringo's journey, from his first drum, through his iconic drum kits and clothing fashion, during his time with The Beatles.

Jerry Hammack

Jerry is a Canadian-American musician, producer, recording and mix engineer, and author of "The Beatles Recording Reference Manuals (1961-1970)", a five book series that reconstructs each song's creation and details the technical profile of every classic Beatles recording session in this period. He has presented his multi-media breakdowns of Beatles classics at academic conferences and events across North America, and is known for his advanced understanding of vintage recording techniques and their application in the digital domain.

From Cherished Memories To New Connections

Since 2019, at least 115 artists of all ages have participated in the Beatles Art Contest at FabFest, amateurs and professionals and more than 30 youth artists too. Altogether, they've created more than 175 new artworks inspired by the Beatles and their impact on music, art and culture.

Many artworks were inspired by personal memories and connections with parents, siblings, friends and spouses around the music of the Beatles, turning cherished memories into new connections and joy at FabFest!

Plan now to share your art, and/or come out and enjoy this year's creations on Saturday, Oct. 4! See more past art in our online FabFest galleries.

Meghan Berney

"I've loved the Beatles since music entered my consciousness. I remember singing along to "I'll Follow the Sun!" in the car when I was little. It was probably my first favorite song.

My dad gave me CDs of their hits, we watched "Help!" a thousand times and my husband and I used all Beatles music in our wedding ceremony.

Every song reminds me of growing up. Every album was my favorite at some point in my life (see what I did there?)" @berneymeg

Laura Sexton

"I cannot tell you how many times I watched "Yellow Submarine" as a child. My dad found a copy at his favorite video store when I was maybe 9? He promised me and my brother that A) it was a cartoon and B) we would love it: 2 for 2, my friend. We watched it on repeat, then dug out Sgt. Pepper's from Dad's shelf with "B" albums (I kid you not, his collection was over 8,000 -- and that's BEFORE the CDs started rolling in in the 90s). We were soon raiding more of his albums, Beatles and beyond -- AND learning the ins and outs of the turntable of course." @laurasxtnart

Why Beatles Music Brings Us Together

Charlotte's Community Historian Weighs In

"John Tosco's genius is the way he uses our "shared pop vocabulary" (l'm a scholar, l'm gonna talk academic) to get everybody singing and playing together. The music of the Beatles seems to touch nearly everyone. Thus a weekend of Beatles music is a powerful vehicle for bringing people together. lt offers common ground for local musicians and for local audiences. The familiarity pulls people in, opens ears, makes collaboration easier - both for players and for listeners. We're singing from the same song-book, but each in our own unique style and voice.”
