Hire a professional to tune up your heating system. We recommend that all heating systems get cleaned and serviced annually and preferably before you need to fire them up for the heating season.
Replace batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Easy rule of thumb: Replace them at the same time you turn the clocks back.
Review your roof for damaged, loose or missing shingles.
Caulk around windows and doors.
Clean the gutters and downspouts.
Divert water by adding extensions to downspouts.
Turn off exterior faucets.
If you have a lawn-irrigation system, have it professionally drained.
Look up inside your chimney for blockages and check to make sure damper is working. If you have a fireplace and use it on a regular basis, we highly recommend having your chimney cleaned annually and repaired immediately if any damage is discovered.
