Face to Face: A New Worship Experience

Fall has officially begun and we're off to an incredible start! Sunday School classes have started, the Halloween youth and children's events are right around the corner, our small groups are underway, and our new form of worship, Face to Face, starts next Sunday!

Perhaps you are looking at your fall schedule and finding it difficult to get to worship or maybe you know of a friend or family member who you want to share worship with but know they would be uncomfortable in a regular service. For these reasons and more, we have started "Face to Face," a new kind of worship experience t hat is participatory, inclusive, and progressive that is early at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings for 30-40 minutes so you have the rest of the day open.

We'll meet at Morningside in the Fireside Room with our chairs arranged in a circle to talk more "face to face!"

Our time together will include singing, hearing scripture, turning to a neighbor or forming small groups to discuss a thought provoking question, shared time of prayer, and we'll close with communion and/or singing. We will also have a kids table for coloring as desired.

Join us this next Sunday on October 7th to try out this new form of worship led by Pastor Wendy for yourself! We'll be meeting every week at Morningside and we look forward to sharing this special time together!

Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water and Loving the Bible Again
If the Bible isn't a science book, instruction manual, or position paper, then what is it? Bestselling author Rachel Held Evans invites readers on a journey of rediscovery as she explores the magic of the Bible, engaging the old, familiar stories in new ways that honor the past and enlighten the present. Drawing upon recent scholarship and literary analysis, Evans creatively retells our favorite Bible stories, explains their contexts and possible interpretations, and then connects these ancient stories to our present-day ones. She invites readers to fall in love with Scripture all over again without checking their intellect --- or their imaginations --- at the door. The [8 weeks / $15]

The (Un)Common Good: How the Gospel Brings Hope to a Divided World
Jim Wallis is a strong, evangelical Christian. For over 2 decades he has been a powerful national voice challenging the evangelical community to remember and reclaim that Jesus invites us followers to engage in ministries of social justice. Open Door Churches August Board Meeting Notes
  • The Open Door Churches Board meeting was held at Englewood UMC on Monday September 24th.
  • David Cox gave a solar presentation about the possibility of installing solar panels on the Open Door Churches. He had the information mostly worked out for Salem First, Morningside and Keizer Clearlake UMCs. He was asked to get the plans together for Las Naciones and Trinity UMC for the next Board meeting.
  • Vickie Plasker gave an update on Englewood UMC. She has been in contact with Tim Overton-Harris about everything that needs to happen. The Englewood members would like to sell the parsonage and use the money to keep the church facility taken care of. Their wish is for the Open Door Churches to take over the responsibilities of the building, with the First UMC Trustees being the legal owner.
  • The Englewood Faith Community Study Class has met two Sundays and that is going well.
  • The modification of the Open Door Churches Board Governance Structure was discussed and passed as presented, including the additions and corrections.
  • Pat Gillespie talked about the ODC becoming a Methodist legal entity. There is a questionnaire to be answered as we move forward.
  • At Annual Conference, each Church was given a grant for $500.00 to be used to create a new ministry of New People and New Places. Trinity needs to come up with a plan or decide to give our money to the Open Door Churches to do a ministry together.
  • When Leroy Barber was here for the September 9th Outdoor Worship, he visited all of the churches and the next morning talked to a small group about the possibilities for ministry in the Salem Keizer area. The next step is to check our cultural competency (diversity training).
  • The Open Door Churches Charge conference will be at First UMC on October 30th at 7 p.m.
  • Each church is asked to send Pat Gillespie what they plan to send as Pastoral Support in 2019. This will help in deciding 2019 pastor compensation next meeting.
  • The next board meeting will be at Morningside UMC on Monday October 22nd at 6:00 p.m.
