Electrical Grid Upgrades Mitigate Impacts of Recent Power Outage
On August 10, an underground utility fire on South Greene Street resulted in electrical outages on UMB's campus. The building most severely impacted was the Bressler Research Building (BRB), with impacts to Howard Hall and the School of Social Work as well. If not for the campus-wide electrical distribution project, it is likely that BRB would have been without power for several weeks. Without the work of this multi-year electrical distribution project, UMB would have had to dig up several streets throughout campus to run new duct and make repairs to damaged feeds. Instead, Cianbro (the electrical project's contracted firm) extended a new feeder to BRB's existing switchgear to restore electricity to BRB using piping that has already been laid as part of the electrical distribution project.
Thanks to everyone involved for getting our campus buildings back up and running as quickly as possible following the outage!

School of Social Work Design Update
UMB has recently begun design of the new building that will be home to the School of Social Work (SSW). Stakeholders from across UMB have been assembled and are actively participating in the design process. Ballinger Inc., a Philadelphia based architecture and engineering firm, is leading the design team. The Whiting - Turner Contracting Company headquartered in Baltimore has been contracted to construct the facility. The project is to be built on the north side of the 600 block of West Lexington Street. The project is incorporating sustainability standards with aspirations to employ emerging strategies that minimize embodied carbon, lower energy needs, and leverage high-performance systems. The design process is planned to conclude next fall with the completion of construction and occupancy scheduled for 2027.

Shoe Mobile
In late July, Jim Bolton, Assistant Director, Training and Occupational Safety (O&M/EHS) led an effort to bring a shoe mobile to campus to provide fittings to staff within Facilities and Operations (EVS and O&M), as well as Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) for protective footwear. The shoe mobile, provided by Grainger, was well-stocked and allowed most staff to walk away with their new shoes the same day. Jim attributes the success of the event to Melissa Morland, Executive Director, Facility Operations & Maintenance Administration (O&M) for her support of the on-site option and Michael Gaunt, Contract Manager (O&M) for setting up the procurement logistics for individual shops in AiM. Staff who were not on campus for the shoe mobile will still be able to purchase shoes online from Grainger.

Billing Process Improvement
This past July, Operations & Maintenance and Environmental Services worked to improve the integration of requests made through the AssetWorks Facilities Work Request Portal with billing in Quantum. Prior to the improvements, there was no description of the work performed in Quantum, causing questions and a lack of understanding for customers and the budget office. The first 120 characters of the description of the work order now appear with the rest of the transactional information in Quantum, reducing customer billing questions and improving customer satisfaction. Great work, O&M and EVS!
