Temporary Daycare in Flamingo Park

Notice Date: October 16, 2026

What's Happening

The city is constructing a temporary daycare facility in Flamingo Park near Michigan Avenue at 13 Street. The pre-fabricated modular structures that form the daycare, adjacent to the soon-to-be butterfly garden and next to the existing Flamingo Park Playground will serve as a new home for The Rainbow Intergenerational Learning Center until such time that the city identifies or builds a new permanent space for the daycare to thrive.

The temporary daycare facility is being constructed as part of the new Fire Station 1 Project to be located at the site of the South Shore Community Center (SSCC) on 6 Street between Meridian and Jefferson Avenues.

The daycare facility includes the following components: entry lobby, reception area, office spaces, staff lounge with food preparation area, storage space, janitor's closet, mechanical room, staff restroom, two toddler restrooms, two toddler classrooms and one infant / toddler classroom. The project also includes fencing, concrete walkways, pathway lighting, three new parking spaces, new retractable bollards to replace existing fixed units, exterior ramp with canopy and new playground equipment exclusively for the use of the day care program participants.

Timeline

The contractor is expected to start mobilizing in Flamingo Park on Monday, October 19, 2026. The modular structures are expected to arrive in November 2026 and we anticipate the Rainbow Intergenerational Learning Center to start at this new location by the end of March 2027.

Commencement of construction activities for the Fire Station 1 project at the SSCC is anticipated to begin in April 2027. Further updates will be shared as they become available. Please note, this schedule could change due to inclement weather or other unforeseen conditions.

What to Expect

  • City departments are coordinating internally regarding various projects occurring simultaneously in Flamingo Park.
  • Moderate levels of construction noise during the day.
  • Construction equipment, machinery and workers on the job site.
  • A construction fence will be set up around the work zone where the temporary daycare structure is to be installed.
