President Scott D. Miller
authors a monthly higher education guest column for The Virginian-Pilot, including the most recent "Respond to the coming climate crisis" (May 2019). Dr. Miller regularly contributes to College Planning and Management ("Maintaining Enrollment Momentum, March 2019) and Enrollment Manager ("Concurrent Enrollment: An Innovative Approach to Transfer Success," March 2019). He also edits the presidential thought series, President to President ("Ten Challenges Facing Higher Education: Shaping the Student Experience" (Complete 2018-2019 Series). Victor Townsend, Jr. published "Stridulation by a cosmetid harvestman" which he coauthored with L. Classen, T.J. Maloney, and M.K. Moore in the Journal of Arachnology, and "Unusual penis morphology among cosmetid harvestmen (Arachnida: Opiliones) from Mesoamerica," coauthored with Danny Proud (VWU class of 2007) in Zoomorphology.
Presentations and Panels  
 
Carol Johnson presented "Teaching Students to Write Real Conclusions" at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Summer Conference on College Composition and Communication at Old Dominion University. 
 
Victor Townsend co-authored two presentations at the 97th annual meeting of the Virginia Academy of Science, which included "Interspecific, ontogenetic and sexual variation in ozopore morphology among cosmetid harvestmen" with S. Teevan-Kamhawi and D. Calpo and "Intraspecific variation in the secretion and morphology of the scent glands of a Neotropical harvestman (Opiliones, Cosmetidae)" with Maynard Schaus and A.C. Albert.  
 
Townsend also presented the poster "Intraspecific variation in the prevalence and intensity of ectoparasitic larval mites upon a Neotropical cosmetid harvestman from Belize" with Maynard Schaus and student E.A. Roberto at the Virginia Academy of Science (VAS) meeting hosted by Old Dominion University.
 
In addition,Townsend co-authored two additional presentations at VAS, which included "SEM-based study of fecal samples from a Neotropical harvestman (Laniatores, Cosmetidae)" with S.A. Wiltshire and Maynard Schaus and "Intraspecific variation in the distribution of heavy metals in the chelicerae and claws of the Neotropical harvestman Erginulus clavotibialis" with S.A. Wright and S.A. Wiltshire.
 
Stephen Leist, Amber Gruszeczka and Robin Takacs, Sue Erickson, Sherry Matis, Joyce Easter and Denise Wilkinson presented at the VWU Technology Thursday workshop, which included four back-to-back sessions on technologies to aid faculty both in and out of the classroom. Participants, in addition to the presenters, included Jayne Sullivan, Kellie Holzer, Maury Howard, Deb Otis, Kathy Stolley, Kathy Merlock Jackson, Kathy Ames, Phil Guilfoyle, Oliver Hedgepeth, Sharon Swift, Maynard Schaus, Diana Risk, Craig Wansink and Larry Hultgren

 
Wayne Pollock presented a session titled "The Practicality of Ethics in Recreational Therapy" at the Virginia State Therapeutic Recreation Association's annual conference held at Longwood University.
Other Accomplishments  
 
Kathy Stolley was re-appointed for an additional three-year term on the editorial board of the Journal of Applied Social Science, the official journal of the Association for Applied and Clinical Sociology.
 
 
Denise Wilk inson, Amber Gruszeczka, and Josh W einstein participated in the annual Faculty Summer Conference, "Jumping on the Social Media Bandwagon: Is it Worth it?," which was hosted by the Center for Le arning and Teaching at Old Dominion University.  
 
 
 
Community Engagement 
 
The Virginia Wesleyan Model UN delegation, led by Antje Schwennicke, participated in the National Model United Nations Conference in New York City, which included a simulation of the procedures and practices of the United Nations. The VWU team (representing the United Arab Emirates in nine committees) earned a "Distinguished Delegation" Award - the second highest ranked award at the conference. The students worked together as a team and engaged in long discussions with delegates from all over the world.
 
VWU science, education, and recreation leisure majors led more t han 100 fourth-grade s tudents in environmental science learning stations across the VWU campus. Maury Howard, Elizabeth Malcolm, Katrina Henry, Bill McConnell, and Jill Sturts led the project with support from Jayne Sullivan and Sandra Ewell in the Education Department. A VWU student shared, " First of all, I was really surprised at how much science I learned and how much work was involved in preparing for one lesson. But the payoff was amazing. They [fourth grade students] were so excited and happy to complete our activity. The best part was that by the end of the lesson they all did well on our assessment."
 
 
Students in PORTfolio 122 "Liberal Arts Seminar," taught by Larry Hultgren and Kathy Stolley, worked with c ommunity partner REACH (Reading Enriches All Children) to raise awareness about the REACH mission, "to promote literacy for children who are at-risk and hom eless throughout Coastal Virginia."
