Brad Areheart

Professor Brad Areheart was invited to present his latest article, "The Privilege Gap" (co-authored with Jessica Roberts), at the Labor Law Group, a small biennial gathering of labor and employment professors. This year the conference was held at the University of San Diego School of Law (December 7-10), and he presented his paper there on December 8, 2022.

Wendy Bach

On December 16, Professor Wendy Bach spoke at George Washington University College of Law at the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys National Summit on the Criminalization of Reproductive Healthcare. The summit focuses on developing defenses after Dobbs, and Professor Bach is speaking on a panel on the new litigation landscape.

Joan Heminway

Professor Joan Heminway's article "Shareholder Wealth Maximization as a Function of Statutes, Decisional Law, and Organic Documents" was recently cited in the Restatement of the Law: Corporate Governance.

Professor Heminway also contributed to two recent business law programs. On December 2, she presented on "The Business of ESG: What Corporate Counsel Need to Know" as part of the “MBA in a Full Day” continuing legal education program hosted by ACC TN (the Tennessee chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel) and Butler Snow LLP at Butler Snow’s Nashville office. In addition, on December 16, Professor Heminway was a featured participant in the virtual “Markets & Management Symposium on the Possibilities & Limitations of Private Ordering,” a research forum sponsored by the Institute for Human Studies and the Florida State University College of Business.

Becky Jacobs

Professor Becky L. Jacobs presented at the 2022 Tennessee State Extension Conference in November with Dr. Chris Clark, Professor and Head, UTIA Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, and Rob Holland, Director, UTIA’s Center for Profitable Agriculture. The title of their presentation was "What Extension Professionals Need to Know About Serving as Expert Witnesses." 

Professor Jacobs also is serving on the ABA Dispute Resolution Section's Annual Spring Conference Planning Committee as a representative of the Legal Education in Dispute Resolution Committee.

Lucy Jewel

By invitation, on December 2, Professor Lucy Jewel attended a planning meeting at Duke Law School’s Center for Law, Race, and Politics regarding the Critical Legal Collective, an organization dedicated to amplifying critical thought in legal education and the legal profession. Professor Jewel is involved in planning the organization’s inaugural conference in April as well as the organization’s new AALS section. 

On December 5, Lucy Jewel presented at an appellate e-filing Webinar sponsored by the Tennessee Bar Association’s Appellate Practice Section. Professor Jewel covered technical brief formatting skills relating to internal and external hyperlinks, tables of authorities, and tables of contents. She also discussed best practices for writing to legal audiences who have shifted from reading hard-copy briefs to reading on laptops and tablets. 

Alex Long

Professor Alex Long’s article "Third-Party Retaliation Problems" has been published in the Emory Law Journal. The article explores the situations in which an employer retaliates (1) against an employee who complains about illegal discrimination by taking action against a non-employee friend or relative of the complaining employee and (2) against an employee who complains about discrimination against a non-employee.

Professor Long was also quoted in two Knoxville News Sentinel articles (here and here) relating to the ongoing tort litigation concerning the 2008 Kingston coal ash spill.  

Maurice Stucke

The Privacy and Security Blog listed Professor Stucke's book "Breaking Away" on its list of notable privacy and security books for 2022.

Porchlight Books recently posted a favorable review of Professor Stucke's book "How Big-Tech Barons Smash Innovation—and How to Strike Back" (co-authored with Professor Ariel Ezrachi).

The Next Big Idea Club also named Professors Stucke's and Ezrachi's book to its Top 22 Business Books of 2022 list.

Valorie Vojdik

Professor Valorie K. Vojdik presented a one-hour "Supreme Court Update" CLE for the Knoxville Bar Association on Dec. 6, 2022. Her presentation focused on some of the most important civil rights and civil liberties cases from the Court's 2021-22 term and previewed cases to be decided this current term.
