Faculty Needs Assessment Survey

Canvas Opportunities

Building Baker Strong In order to prepare you for the Fall 2018 Canvas roll-out, mark your calendars for one of the three in-person training days. This training will compliment what is already happening on your campus. All faculty are invited! Campuses with enough participants will charter a bus or car pool. If you teach Online and are located near one of our campuses, you are able to participate in that campuses travel plans. Each of these sessions will be offering the same information, so pick the date and location that works best with your schedule. Please BYOD (Bring Your Own Device). Baker College Professional Development Offerings

You're Invited! Baker College Conference for Higher Education and the Public Good Owosso Campus - August 21, 2018 You are cordially invited to attend the Baker College Conference for Higher Education and the Public Good on Tuesday, August 21st, 2018 , at the Baker College of Owosso campus. This conference is free of charge, and will feature dozens of presentations from faculty across all disciplines and campuses. Dr. John Burkhardt (University of Michigan School of Education) will be the keynote speaker for this event. There will be many opportunities to discuss and participate in the scholarship and service work done by Baker College faculty. You can find more information about the conference at the  Center for Teaching Excellence site .  Please  RSVP . Space is limited, and space will go to the first to reserve it.

Teaching & Learning Strategies

Baker College has partnered with the University of Michigan to support faculty and students in Critically Inclusive Teaching practices. What is Critically Inclusive Teaching? Inclusive teaching involves deliberately cultivating a learning environment where all students are treated equitably, have equal access to learning, and feel welcome, valued, and supported in their learning. Such teaching attends to student identities and seeks to change the ways systemic inequities shape dynamics in teaching-learning spaces, affect individuals’ experiences of those spaces, and influence course and curriculum design. Four Principles of Critical Inclusive Teaching Transparency: Communicating clearly about norms, expectations, evaluation criteria Academic Belonging: Cultivating students’ sense of connection to the discipline + scholarly and professional communities Structured Interactions: Providing or eliciting goals, protocols, processes to make sure group interactions don’t default to patterns of privileging already-privileged voices or otherwise replicating systemic inequities Critically Engaging: Difference Recognizing that students bring diverse identities, strengths, and needs to the learning environment For more information on how to incorporate Critically Inclusive Teaching Strategies in your online and on-ground courses, access the University of Michigan Center for Research on Learning and Teaching handout or by visiting the CRLT website .

What do my students know about Canvas ? Not sure what your students know about Canvas? Do they even know that we are switching to Canvas, Fall 2018? Rest assured - all new students will have a video in their new student orientation, and returning students will receive this video link via email. Please click on the Student Orientation Video link here to see what your students will know. Closed captioning options are available for this video.

Assessment Corner

Are you teaching a course with a Direct Measure Assessment?  Click the  Direct Measure Schedule  to find out. Please note:  It is also located on My Services>Department Resources> Academic> Assessment (In the menu on the left). If the course you are teaching is not on the list, then you are set until next semester.

Center for Teaching Excellence

 The Mission of the Center for Teaching Excellence is to create, identify, and provide support structures and processes to cultivate a professional learning environment where faculty take ownership and are positioned to direct their own professional learning relative to Baker’s Mission and institutional goals. The Center for Teaching Excellence is a collaborative entity where the Associate Provost of Academics, System Faculty Development Specialist, and the individual campus Instructional Effectiveness Specialists (IESs) partner to design, develop, present, and facilitate professional development in order to support and coach faculty in their pursuit of quality teaching and learning.
