Important Reminder for Providence Students and Faculty!

Recently named the Chief Executive Officer for Democrats for Education Reform (DFER), former Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza is working to support leaders committed to our vision for a public education system that empowers all of its students — particularly students of color, from low-income backgrounds, and other historically underserved students — to reach their limitless potential.

Mayor Elorza will also be conducting a brief Q&A session for CU students, faculty and staff on the Wednesday, April 19 at the Met H.S. in Providence from 5:30-6:15 P.M.

LAB FACULTY

Dear Lab Faculty,

The next few weeks are packed with exciting showcases of learning and celebrations. Here’s what you need to know:

Prep for Exhibition - Weeks 14 & 15

Graduating Student Speeches - Week 15 (R.I. Only)

  • Each 30 minute individual celebration is a chance for you to speak about your student, for your student to speak about their journey, and for others to offer gratitude and love.
  • Newer lab faculty, be sure to check out 1-2 speeches to get a sense of it all and encourage your students to as well.

Exhibitions - Week 16

  • Happening during class time in the same format as your regular lab:
  1. Online labs will meet online
  2. In person labs will present in person WITH a link for virtual guests
  • CU staff will be attending as many exhibitions as possible!
  • Please continue to use the Critical Response Process (or the modified version in guides).
  • In lieu of a final exam, please have students reflect on their exhibition and feedback prior to the end of the semester.

TA2BA CORNER

Last newsletter, I shared resources for registering for summer courses (check out the last issue if you missed it!).

As mentioned, we are in the process of trying to secure funding for TA2BA students for summer programming. Students were sent a google form to complete so that we can have an idea of how much funding is needed to cover courses. Lab Faculty, please encourage students to submit the survey if they haven’t yet!

Whether students are planning to take summer courses or not, here are a few other things they may want to think about pursuing during the summer months:

  • Work on LIPs and/ or Big 10s!

- Check out the LIP workshop series every Wednesday

  • Put their teaching into practice

- Many schools need TAs for summer school- they should receive information about

this from their school district

- Generation Teach summer positions

- FabNewport’s summer experience

- What else? (Please share other relevant opportunities!)

Here’s to a great last few weeks of the Spring Semester!!
