69th Annual FAIR OAKS FIESTA
 in Old Fair Oaks Village
Sunday May 6
One of the joys of living in Fair Oaks is the great sense of community here, revealed this month in the 69th annual Fair Oaks Fiesta in Old Fair Oaks Village, Sunday, May 6th, hosted by the Fair Oaks Chamber of Commerce.

Started in 1948, this annual celebration brings back the flavor of old-fashioned community life, packed with events for the whole family. There will be games and activities for the kids, live music, a pancake breakfast, and arts and crafts vendors.

A classic car show is a highlight of the festival as upwards of 300 cars line the streets of Old Fair Oaks Village.

And families challenge their building skills creating crazy push carts in the annual Toilet Bowl Racer Challenge.

To top it off, the Fair Oaks Sun Run attracts avid runners and families alike, to either the 5 mile Chicken Run or the 2 mile family Rooster Walk or the 1/4 mile kid's fun run through beautiful Fair Oaks. Come run, or join the crowd to welcome all at the finish line!
We too will be at the Fiesta. Members from Fair Oaks EcoHousing will be hosting a booth at the event. Stop by booth #16 and say hi, and find out more about us, and living in this marvelous place.

It will be a day you don't want to miss!

The Impact of a Front Porch
Man reading on porch
One of the basic tenets of how our cohousing complex is laid out, is that we purposely made a choice to put cars on the perimeter of the project, and choose to have a walk and village green in the middle of the community. Every unit in Fair Oaks Ecohousing will have a porch that faces the central walk, facilitating interactions between the residents. A great article by Brian Jones, The Civic Character of a Front Porch , explores the part architectural design, in the form of the front porch, can play in the development of community:

"When we know what is going on in our communities and others know this about us, then a certain type of trust coalesces. Through shared responsibilities and collective activities, neighbors come to see that they are not alone and are truly needed. Without those settings and conditions where we can come to know one another and become personally involved in giving ourselves to others, we are at risk for being folded back into ourselves."

For this very reason, we are looking forward to spending time on our porches, getting to know our neighbors, and creating our community!
Fair Oaks EcoHousing Project News
May brings a flurry of activity with the infamous "Options" time. This is the time when members of the community get to customize the look and feel of their homes with selected options. Meetings and emails abound as we debate Marmoleum vs. bamboo, rug vs cork, fiberglass vs. solid surface. All the while balancing costs and environmental concerns. An exciting, crazy time as we put together our dream.
