Enjoy a brief interview with the artist:
1. What exciting artistic motto or mission drives you every day?
Having worked in the microbiology lab all my life I have a keen eye for detail and morphology .. I am never bored, always focusing on shades of color, shadows, in the simplest things around me, how sunlight changes my cat into a striped cat sitting on a chair, painting brings me joy and I want to resonate that with my viewers, it’s especially fulfilling when they do, and want to see my work in their homes.
2. Share three delightful words that capture the essence of your unique style:
Eclectic, Dreamlike, Impressionistic
3. Tell us about your journey and how you embarked on your artistic path:
In the 80s, Darlene Kaplan was my neighbor and mentor, she encouraged me to paint. I took several lessons from local artists. In 2015 Barbara Cram inspired me to join the Falls Church Art and later I joined Fairfax Art league as it was much closer to my house.
4. What sparks your creativity and how do you overcome any obstacles?
I am motivated by the night sky, the ocean and the life within it .. looking through famous artist’s works .. I notice paintings in the movies, restaurants, murals, friend's homes. My go to for help is YouTube.. I learn new techniques, color mixing etc. there’s a plethora of information!
5. Tell us about a cherished piece of art you've created or a memorable art experience that brings you joy?
I was inspired to paint the Small Magellanic Cloud after watching the Hubble telescope IMAX movie.. it was a spiritual, meditative experience and it gave me a sense of connection with the universe.
6. Please share a heartwarming moment from the past month that has brought a smile to your face:
I was very touched when a little girl around 6 years old, saved up her pocket money for three weeks so she could buy one of my paintings of a cat … just precious
