Officer of the Month & CAC Officer of the Year

PFC Heidi Smith was recognized as the Officer of the Month for March and the Officer of the Year from the Community Advisory Committee.

PFC Heidi was recognized for her involvement in the investigation of a shooting that occurred at the Tysons Corner Center during the summer of 2022. This event involved a firearm being discharged multiple times in the middle of the afternoon.

The incident evolved into a high-profile case with significant media coverage and increased interest from the community because the shooter, Mr. Noah Settles, is a music artist, also known as “No Savage.”

Since the date of the event, PFC Smith has worked continuously with the Major Crimes Bureau (MCB) along with the Commonwealth Attorney’s office to secure, organize and present evidence related to the case. Shortly after the incident, Detectives from MCB requested assistance from the Urban Team in obtaining surveillance footage from mall.

PFC Smith combed through hours of footage from numerous cameras on the property. She successfully tracked and located 10 suspects that were involved. PFC Smith captured the suspects movements and organized the video. This included tagging notable events and generating still images of involved parties.

Due to her expertise with the mall surveillance system and intimate understanding of the case, PFC Smith was regularly called upon for assistance and according to the lead investigators, was the “go-to person for all things Tysons Corner.” On several occasions, PFC Smith met with investigators on short notice and outside of her normal working hours.

PFC Smith presented this key video evidence to the Commonwealth Attorney’s office. Even though PFC Smith was not assigned to this case, she was an integral part of the investigation, her exemplary work ultimately led to multiple felony convictions and a successful conclusion to the case.

Road Shark Traffic Campaign

Fairfax County Police Department is rolling out their 2023 "Road Shark" Campaign throughout Fairfax County. Road Shark is a high-visibility and coordinated enforcement and education effort to deter aggressive driving, reduce crashes, and change driving behavior.

The department will have officers in high-visibility areas all over the county. Officers will be looking for an array of traffic violations including aggressive driving, excessive speeding, driving under the influence, school zone violation, distracted driving and others.

Below is a three-year comparison TYD DWI arrests, traffic related calls for service, traffic stops and citations. As well as the top 10 statutes officers at McLean Station write citations for.

Distracted driving has become a deadly epidemic on our roads. While drivers texting behind the wheel tops what seems like an endless list of distractions, other risky behaviors are occurring. In addition, law enforcement agencies in Virginia are striving to prevent distracted driving crashes, injuries, and fatalities with a national enforcement wave. Educate yourself on Virginia's hands-free law.

Remember - It's not worth it and if U Drive, U Text, U Pay.

Crime Prevention Tips

As the weather becomes nicer more people are venturing to parks and hiking trails. Parking lots can be a great opportunity for criminals to break into a vehicle.

Prepare before you go!

  • Only take what you need: Identification, keys and a credit card
  • Instead of leaving your wallet or keys in the vehicle, take a backpack.
  • Before getting to the park store any valuables out of site. Don't wait till you get to the park to hide your stuff. Criminals maybe watching.
  • Ensure windows are rolled up and double check vehicles are locked before leaving your vehicle.

The police department does not ask for donations or fundraise. If you receive any request stating, they are with the Fairfax County Police Department and are fundraising and/or asking for donations it is a scam.

In addition to not asking for donations law enforcement, whether local or federal, will not call you demanding payment to resolve a warrant, failing to report for jury duty, etc. No law enforcement agency will ask you for money or payment in the form of gift cards to avoid arrest. Scammers will make their caller ID appear as if they are calling from a legitimate number. Do not confirm your identity with the scammer and avoid giving out any personal information.

IRS Scams: Since we are still in tax season just a reminder. IRS impersonators have been around for a while, so they are switching up their game by contacting you about a tax rebate or refund payment plan. Here are a few things to remember:

  • The IRS will not call, email or text to contact you first.  They always start by sending a letter. Confirm by calling the IRS directly 800-829-1040.
  • Never click on links in unexpected texts, emails or use the phone number from a voice mail you receive (that goes for any scam).
  • Be wary of phishing emails or texts.  Phishing email/texts are designed to lure a victim by convincing you it is coming from a trusted sender.  You believe the email/text to be real and provided confidential information such as password, bank account information, etc but it is a scam website.
  • Do your own research on the correct contact information. In another browser search the company’s website to obtain the correct information.

If you want to find the status of any pending refund, go to the IRS official website
