Friends,

Over the past month I have taken every opportunity I’ve had to tell the latest good news about the booming Fairfax County economy. I’m glad to report that our economy is stronger now than before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. First, as of February, more Fairfax County residents were working than before the pandemic. That good news was recently eclipsed – our total County-resident labor force is now the largest it has ever been. This is welcome news particularly when our employers are looking to fill over 70,000 jobs in the County and over 126,000 in the region. We need to keep our foot on the gas – forging partnerships with business, government and academia, increasing the affordable housing stock to attract more workers, and more.

Second, we also have a new record of employers in Fairfax County. In fact, employer establishments in Fairfax County have increased by 12% since before the pandemic! Talk about a good news story.

We are strengthening our economy through being a welcoming and inclusive place to live and work and by investing in major priorities like Fairfax County Public Schools and our high quality public services. There are many reasons people want to live in Fairfax County and businesses want to locate here, and our Board is committed to building on our economic success.

Our region is also exploring how we can continue to diversify our economy to reduce our reliance on the federal government. One way is through the collection of data on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to understand the impact of FDI on our regional economy. Did you know Northern Virginia is home to over 700 foreign-owned businesses? The Northern Virginia Regional Commission is looking to fill a gap in local and regional data on FDI. This work will collect and analyze data to rank

1) Total job creation and earnings emanating from FDI with the 25 largest investing countries;

2) Local revenue generated by FDI from the 25 largest investing countries;

3) The total number of foreign-owned enterprises by county;

4) and foreign-owned affiliate jobs by sector.

I am eager to see the results of NVRC’s work, and to see the next round of positive economic news! You can also check out the latest economic data provided by the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority in The Pulse

Gun Violence Awareness Day

What's happening? June 2nd is National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Gun violence impacts our entire community, and its effects reverberate throughout all of society. As a County we are committed to ending gun violence.

How can I help?

  • Speak up. Since July 2020, Virginia has had a “red flag law” in place to prevent individuals who show signs of being a threat to themselves or others from purchasing, possessing or transporting any kind of firearm.

  • Make sure you are properly disposing of unwanted firearms. The quickest and easiest way to get rid of the firearm or ammunition is simply to call the public safety non-emergency number at 703-691-2131 and request an officer respond to your home.

  • Make sure you’re locking away your firearms. Studies show that when firearms are accessible, individuals are more than three times likely to die by suicide and that most people who die by suicide use firearms (61 percent.)

  • Know the signs of emotional or mental health crisis and provide support. If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health emergency, call our 24-hour hotline 703-573-5679, TTY 711.

Anything else? Check out Moms Demand Action Wear Orange Weekend to participate in the upcoming Gun Violence Prevention Rally on June 2nd and make sure to wear orange June 2nd – June 4th to show your support for gun violence awareness.

I will be joining Congressman Gerry Connolly on Friday, June 9th at 10 a.m. on a Gun Violence Discussion Panel. You can tune in and watch the discussion here: Fairfax County Government Channel 16 | Cable and Consumer Services.

You can read more about what the County is doing to fight against gun violence by visiting Resources Available to Help Prevent Gun Violence | News Center (fairfaxcounty.gov).

Make sure you Speak Up!

Celebrate National Trails Day

What’s happening? Every year we dedicate the first Saturday of June as National Trails Day. This commemorates our commitment as a community to leave our parks and trails better than we found them.

Tell me more! There are so many physical and mental health benefits to walking, hiking, jogging, biking, and spending time on trails. It’s so important that we maintain the conditions of our trails and parks so people can continue to enjoy them.
