Operating Support Grant Recipients

Congratulations to the following organizations for receiving ArtsFairfax's Operating Support Grant!

Green Corner

The Department of Public Works and Environmental Services rolled out its first electric refuse truck to pick up residential trash and yard waste on routes throughout the County — a move that will save money and protect the environment.

The new truck is another significant step in the county’s operational energy strategy, which aims for government operations to be carbon-neutral by 2040. Electric vehicles (EVs) produce zero emissions, meaning cleaner air for Fairfax County. Electric vehicles are quieter, also reducing noise pollution. The electric truck saves residents money by requiring less overall maintenance and eliminating fuel costs.

For the entire month of September, the Fairfax County Park Authority is challenging customers to drop off more food scraps to be composted at Farmers Markets than they did in August. Each Market will be competing through Sunday, October 1. As an incentive, customers who drop off food scraps at the Markets during the last week in September may receive a free countertop compost bin.

Learn more about the fall compost competition.

When you rent your home or business, it’s hard to use renewable energy sources. That’s where your electricity provider comes in! Energy companies like NOVEC and Dominion Energy offer different programs that renters can participate in to ensure green power is part of the grid.

These programs are a good alternative for renters or residents of multi-unit properties who want to use electricity from renewable energy sources but can’t install solar panels or other renewable energy systems or because they can’t afford the cost of installation.

Fairfax County’s facilities are making the switch to battery-powered blowers and other electric equipment to protect the health of people and the environment, and so can you. To reduce its carbon footprint and lead by example, Fairfax County is continuing its efforts to phase out gas-powered blowers in favor of electric equipment in its operations.

The Park Authority (FCPA) is set to replace 55 gas-powered leaf blowers – over half its supply – with battery-powered ones across its area maintenance shops. And the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) expects to be 50% electric on its leaf blowers and trimmers by the end of the current fiscal year.

Fairfax Connector's New Stroller Policy

In a significant stride towards enhancing family travel experiences, Fairfax Connector is delighted to announce that adults boarding with a child in a stroller are no longer required to fold the stroller and hold the child in their lap. This family-friendly approach allows passengers to board Fairfax Connector buses with children comfortably secured in their strollers.

Fairfax Connector has seen a substantial increase in youth ridership since implementing free fares for children 12 and under with a paying adult in May 2023. Fairfax Connector’s goal is to make it as convenient as possible for passengers to travel with their children on the bus system.
