FAIRFAX NAACP STATEMENT ON FCPS 2021-2022 CALENDAR

The Fairfax County NAACP urges the Fairfax County Public School (FCPS) Board and FCPS Administration to adopt a 2021-22 Standard School Year calendar that recognizes the religious and ethnic diversity of the student body and their families and takes into account the concerns of faculty and staff.

We listened as community members of many faiths and cultures reached out to the branch to express varying positions on the proposed changes. This is a complicated problem requiring a nuanced solution, strong consideration to unintended consequences, and a careful execution.

We acknowledge that to live true to the values of One Fairfax, we must approach this with an equity lens that respects the array of holidays celebrated. Fairfax County NAACP is committed to religious, educational, and social equity, and requests that before Calendar D is announced publicly, the FCPS Administration and FCPS School Board do due diligence and ascertain if the proposed calendar is both religiously and morally equitable, offering the most good while causing the least harm.

Respectfully,

Karen T. Campblin
