CHAMBER SNAPSHOT - July 31, 2024

BIG NEWS!! The Chamber offices are moving!

Last week was a fun one as we finalized our lease on new space. We have a few months of construction work to complete, so we won't be moving until sometime in October. The office is located at 700 Nilles Road and is the old Bayer Becker office. We cannot WAIT for everyone to see the changes we are making and how we will be able to better serve our members.

Look for more information as we get started on construction in the coming weeks.

The 2024 expanded Sales Tax Holiday will take place from 12:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 30 until 11:59 p.m. Thursday, August 8.

In conjunction with the Ohio General Assembly, Governor DeWine expanded the length of Ohio’s Sales Tax holiday to 10 days and will allow tax-free purchases made in-person or online on all eligible items of up to $500.

“Ohio’s sales tax holiday, historically, has been meant to help families buy clothing and school supplies for the upcoming school year,” said Governor DeWine. “This expanded sales tax break will help Ohio’s families with back-to-school necessities as well as other substantial purchases during a time when so many household budgets are being strained.”

Here are some details, but please go to Ohio Department of Taxation for more information:

  • What is exempt: The sales tax exemption applies to qualifying items sold for $500 or less. This includes some prepared food items sold in restaurants, if each item is under $500.
  • What is not exempt: Services are not exempt from sales tax.
  • Reporting: Retailers must still report exempt sales on their tax return.
  • Handling various situations: The article also provides guidance for retailers on how to handle various situations, such as rain checks, rebates, layaway sales, and exchanges and returns.

LEADERSHIP FAIRFIELD 2024-25 Class Forming

The Fairfield Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce that applications are now open for the 2024-25 Class of Leadership Fairfield. This prestigious nine-month program, running from September through May, offers participants a unique opportunity to engage deeply with the Fairfield and Fairfield Township communities while developing both personal and professional leadership skills.

Leadership Fairfield meets once a month, providing in-depth knowledge about our community. The program is designed to equip participants with advanced communication and leadership skills, with a focus on both personal and professional growth.

Program Highlights:

  • Duration: September 2024 - May 2025
  • Sessions: Nine sessions and a recognition lunch
  • Project: A group project benefiting the community, developed outside class time. Past projects have supported Animal Friends, Fairfield City Schools, and Shared Harvest Food Bank.

Participants will engage in diverse encounters with various community sectors, including city and township departments, education, tourism, economic development, non-profit agencies, elected officials, and more. These experiences provide invaluable insights and foster meaningful connections among class members. The program’s structure encourages teamwork, allowing participants to recognize their own strengths and weaknesses.

Alumni of Leadership Fairfield emerge as well-rounded community leaders, having studied and experienced the community firsthand. They gain a deep understanding of local strengths and challenges, establishing a network of communication that continues to benefit the community long after the program concludes.

Apply Now: The class is limited to 25 participants. Applications are due by September 1, 2024. To register, visit Leadership Fairfield Registration.

The new location, opening in August 2024, will be operated by Kurt and Ally Wakeman, who are thrilled to introduce their community to Frutta Bowls.

Kurt and Ally discovered Frutta Bowls in 2022 and were immediately captivated by the brand’s commitment to healthy, delicious food. This passion fueled their dream to open their own franchise, and today, they are excited to turn that dream into reality.

“Opening Frutta Bowls in Bridgewater Falls is a dream come true for us,” said Kurt and Ally Wakeman. “We’re thrilled to share our love for açaí bowls and healthy eating while creating a vibrant community hub.”

CHAMBER MEMBER BENEFITS

Do you have questions about unemployment insurance? Hunter Consulting has Frequently asked questions on their website. Here is one one.

Q: An employee gave a two-weeks resignation notice, but we opted to terminate employment then. Why are they allowed to collect benefits?

A: If an employee is not allowed to work up the last day in which they are willing to work, the bureau deems this as termination. However, if the employer pays the person their regular wages or salary up to the day in which the employee was willing to work, then the separation will then be deemed a voluntary quit.
