 From The Music Director

Jon Noyes conducting FCCC

Welcome to the 19th season of the Fairfield County Children's Choir! We have planned a fantastic series of concerts, along with collaborations and projects that will make the year quite exciting. This issue of Quarternotes includes information about our concert calendar, various news items and the always-popular Chorister Profiles.

In this column, I often address issues concerning music and education.  In this vein I pose a question for our readers: Do you still enjoy -- even cherish -- the music you listened to as a teenager? I will attempt an explanation based on some recent readings in music psychology and then connect this with some thoughts on the repertoire of the FCCC. Read More

FCCC at Tanglewood

On Sunday, June 2 the FCCC Chamber Singers performed Beethoven's Choral Fantasy and three pieces by Aaron Copland with the Norwalk Youth Symphony at Tanglewood. We also performed our own set, including the Biebl Ave Maria, Lang's Cantate Domino, Wanting Memories and Bridge Over Troubled Water. Tanglewood is the summer home of the Boston Symphony and is a very important and historic musical venue. The eminent Gilbert Kalish was the piano soloist on the Choral Fantasy. Mr. Cotellese and Miss Harmata led a group of FCCC soloists. Congratulations to all!!!

Singing America

A Celebration of The Great American Songbook
Saturday, May 10, 2014, 7 pm
Fairfield Warde High School, Fairfield, CT

The composers who gave rise to what has become known as the Great American Songbook translated positive values and an optimistic spirit into the soundtrack of American life. Their songs offered hope of better days during the Great Depression, built morale during two world wars, and helped build social bridges within our culture. The FCCC is proud to feature songs from this inspirational body of work, produced by such familiar tunesmiths as George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, and Richard Rodgers. We invite you to experience with us the positive power of singing these uniquely American songs.

Aloha Children's Choral Festival

The FCCC Chamber Singers traveled to Hawaii from July 14-22 to participate in the inaugural Aloha Children's Choral Festival. The festival was comprised of six choirs - three from the mainland United States, one from Hawaii and one each from China and Canada. We rehearsed as a massed choir under the direction of Henry Leck from Indianapolis. We also had two concerts in which each choir performed their own repertoire.

We also toured Pearl Harbor, the Polynesian Cultural Center and enjoyed a cruise on a catamaran with another Polynesian show off Waikiki Beach with Diamond Head nearby. A highlight of the tour was snorkeling at Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, "one of the most spectacular natural resources in Hawaii."
