Fairfield and 60 to Close for Culvert Replacement
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced that a full closure will take place on Illinois 60 between Cedar Lake Road and Fairfield Road, in Fremont Township, beginning, weather permitting, Monday, June 6. The closure is necessary to remove a drainage structure under Illinois 60.

Beginning Monday, Illinois 60 will be closed in both directions between Cedar Lake Road and Fairfield Road until Friday, June 10. A posted detour will direct traffic travelling eastbound on Illinois 60 to go north on Fairfield Road, east on Belvidere Road (Illinois 120) and south on Cedar Lake Road to connect back to Illinois 60. Westbound traffic on Illinois 60 should take the reverse route.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

They have to allow you access to your street to access your homes.

Hawley Update for June 3

This Friday, June 3, the contractor will begin work on the south leg of California Avenue. This will require the intersection of California and Hawley to be completely closed to all through traffic on California until the completion of the work. SB traffic will have to turn right at Hawley. NB traffic will have no access to Hawley. Pershing will be re-opened to help with access during this closure. Residents will still be provided access to their driveways.

The contractor will begin their preparations on California as well as excavation of the new Carl Sandburg Middle School parking lot on that date. Monday, they will begin removing the pavement to be replaced on California. Storm sewer and excavation for the new pavement will start soon after. This is the last big chunk of work left west of Prairie, so we’re glad to get it started.

The contractor is planning to place curb and gutter between Prairie and Lake St., including Garfield, on June 2. Next week, they will begin framing and pouring the gaps and sidewalk through that stretch.

AT&T has cleared their conflict, so the contractor will resume their storm sewer work at the east end Friday or Monday. It should take about two days, then earthwork can begin in that area.

Also next week, a storm sewer crossing Hawley will be installed at Garfield. For a short period during the day, Hawley traffic will be diverted down Lincoln to Hammond to Prairie, so that crews can cross the live lane of traffic. This must be done because the pipe is quite deep, and there are concerns that trying to install this in stages may undermine the new pavement. When the date for that work is confirmed, we’ll let you know.

The contractor is still making good progress on meeting the August 5 deadline to finish the first stage. They have quite a bit of work scheduled for the next couple weeks, so after that we’ll have a good sense of when Stage 1 will end and two-way traffic will be restored on Hawley.

Ruse Burglary Alert
R use Burglary Alert: Northern Illinois tends to see an increase in ruse burglaries during the summer months, and ruse burglars have already been striking in Lake County and surrounding areas.

A ruse burglary is a distraction technique used to lure homeowners outside of their home. After the homeowner is outside the home and distracted by one individual, another individual(s) enters the home typically targeting items to steal such as cash, jewelry, and other items of value. Below are some reminders from the Lake County IL Sheriff's Office:

• Never allow anyone inside your home without a prescheduled appointment

• If an individual claims affiliation with your local government, ask the person to produce identification and call the government office to verify the individual

• Do not exit your home with an unscheduled visitor, leaving your home and valuables as potential targets

• Keep an extra watch on elderly neighbors and family members reminding them of these types of criminal behaviors

• Educate your relatives and neighbors (especially the elderly), informing them ruse burglaries are on the increase in Lake County

• Immediately report any suspicious activity by calling 911

More Scams
I continue to post the reminders about the scams because unfortunately, people to get duped by them.  The IRS will never call you, don't allow access to your computer by someone posing as Microsoft, don't donate to any organization claiming to be a police fund (pick your own charities)  and don't be fooled by someone telling you your grandchild is in trouble. If you have questions, call your local police department.

Be aware that technology can make the caller ID read out any phone number or name of an organization.   The IRS scam has now escalated to a call stating the caller is from the Lake County Sheriff's office and you are asked to contact an Officer regarding a warrant for your arrest.  The caller ID looks like it is from the Sheriff's office.  The people calling are professionals and I don't want our residents to fall for these threats.   Please notify your neighbors that the Lake County Sheriff's office will not call you regarding the IRS.
