Greetings from C. Darby Ulery, founder of "Let's Go! Fairhope," events-related newsletter, calendar and website resource for Fairhope, Alabama.
It's back to school week, and "Eastern Shore Tiki Week."
It's also two weeks 'til our municipal election.
Thank you to all the readers who shared their thoughts last week regarding the topic of paid political ads. Each of your responses was truly appreciated. What a wonderful community we live in!
After much consideration, I'd like to thank our esteemed WABF local radio station for helping solve the conundrum. We have to keep the lights on, folks, and this is designed to be a community resource. So far, no one asking to ban political ads has submitted any viable alternatives to funds, but for Let's Go! Fairhope, it's not just about paying the bills...
If we ban our municipal candidates from supporting the newsletter, would we ban politically-minded groups from promoting their activities as well? What about faith-based groups? My grandmother always said there were two things never allowed at the bridge table: politics and religion. It worked for them, but here it seems like a slippery slope and a negative precedent to set to keep certain people or ideas out.
Before long, we'll be sharing festive fall and holiday events and August will be over. So bear with us, and keep sending in your events and ideas!
