AGRONOMY

Soft playing conditions, deep ball marks, inconsistent green speed, and bumpy putting surfaces frustrate golfers and golf course superintendents. If golfers and superintendents both want firm and smooth putting greens, why do some facilities struggle to achieve these conditions? Putting greens might be temporarily soft or inconsistent for many reasons, such as recent rainfall, but when there are chronic issues the underlying problem is often excessive organic matter just beneath the putting surface. Core aeration, verticutting, and topdressing are the primary agronomic practices used to manage organic matter, but they are disliked by most golfers. The choice for superintendents is a difficult one: Upset golfers by failing to produce the desired playing conditions, or upset them by occasionally implementing disruptive programs that are necessary to produce the desired conditions. Since course conditioning is one of the most important factors affecting golfer satisfaction (M. Adler, 2013), effective organic matter management should trump occasional disruptions for maintenance. This article will assist golf course superintendents and the golf community by describing the most effective programs for managing organic matter in putting greens.

INFO FOR LADIES INTERESTED IN A FRIDAY GOLF GROUP.

There are many new women golfers moving to The Village, and often, there are requests for information. The HSV WGA 9-Hole Women's League is welcoming new members who are interested in making new golfing friends and improving their game. A different 9-hole game is played each Friday with different members and every player has a chance to win regardless of handicap. Prizes are awarded at the Fall Luncheon. Membership to the league requires an established handicap, but there is no minimum handicap to play in this friendly group of gals. A handicap is easy to establish: 1) Apply for a Ghin Number through the POA website: https://www.explorethevillage.com/images/2021_ASGA_GHIN_Registration_110920.pdf 2) Enter scores after playing a minimum of 54 holes (six 9-holes or three 18 holes) from any regulation golf course. New Members are assigned a Big Sis to help them get acquainted with other members. They will be seated together at the 3/26 Spring Luncheon and play together in the 4/2 kick-off scramble when the league's season begins. This year, any member who brings in two or more new members will be entered into a drawing for special prizes which will be awarded at the Fall Luncheon. Please visit the league website: hsvwga9-hole.org to view schedules and be sure to click on “Mary's Corner” to get the latest message from our President, Mary Cupstid. Respond by comment or PM if interested - it's a great group and we'd love to welcome you to the league!
THE HSV SOCIAL LEAGUE

The Social League will be starting up the 2021 season on April 7th and will play thru the month of October. We play 18 holes on Wednesdays at seven courses in the Village. All skill levels are welcome. Play your own game. No points or games and no GHIN number needed. Enjoy the camaraderie during and after the round. Many gals stay for lunch. You may join at anytime. Give us a try. We would love to get to know you.

Applications are available on our website, http://www.hsvwgasl.org or through the POA Golf League page. Look for the Member Sign Up on the top. New members as well as returning members need to fill out an application and send a check for $15.00, made out to WGA Social League and send to Mary Cupstid at 40 Oviedo Way, HSV, AR 71909.

After each round look for the yellow Social League box in the Pro Shop to drop off any achievements made during play. Birdies, chips - ins, or a hole in one.
