"For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you. When you search for me, you will find me; if you seek me with all your heart, I will let you find me" (Jeremiah 29:11-14).

Leadership with a Heart

Reflect

Compassion is more than just feeling sympathy or pity for others; it’s about actively seeking to alleviate suffering and promote the well-being of all those we encounter. Embracing compassion as a Franciscan leader means fostering a culture of care and concern within our teams and organizations. It means creating space for open and honest communication, where individuals feel safe to share their struggles and vulnerabilities without fear of judgment or reprisal. It means taking the time to listen deeply to the stories and experiences of others and responding with kindness and empathy.

Pray

Good and gracious God,

Help us embrace compassion as a guiding principle of our leadership,

recognizing that true greatness lies not in power or prestige,

but in service to others with love and empathy.

Help us to lead with compassion

so that we bear witness to the transformative power of your love and grace in the lives of those whom we serve and encounter.

Amen.

Act

Offer a prayer for empathy and understanding, asking God to help you lead with compassion and kindness in all that you do.

Where Did You See the Face of Christ Today?

Maureen Crowley Heil

Friday 23rd of August 2024

Sometimes, when I speak in schools or parishes, I tell stories of my mission experience in Haiti working with Hands Together (HT), founded by Father Tom Hagan, OSFS and Doug Campbell. Their ministry is in Cité Soleil, Haiti, the largest slum in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. HT's mission is to bring food, education, medical help, and most importantly, the face of Christ to the residents of the slum, especially the children.

Our team's typical day was long -- Mass at 5:30 a.m. with Saint Mother Teresa's Sisters, followed by Morning Prayer in Creole and English, before setting off to work at local schools, orphanages, and clinics run with help from the Pontifical Mission Societies. After a day of feeding babies, dressing wounds, and massaging the paper-thin skin of AIDS patients, we would return to the house for a light dinner and Evening Prayer. Then, we would meet on the roof for our final reflection of the day. We sat in the darkness (the house had sporadic electricity) and would pray about one question: Where did I see the face of Christ today?

Was it in the baby I held whose skin was flaking off due to malnourishment? Was it in the man whose erupted tumor I cleaned and bandaged at the wound care clinic? Was it in the school children I played with during their recess? The choice was impossible as Christ was ever present to me in all of them.

The question has stayed with me. I try to ask myself that every night. I also bring it with me wherever I go in my ministry. Speaking on behalf of the Pontifical Mission Societies gives me the opportunity to remind people that it may be simple to hear stories from the missions and see Jesus in the details. It may be more difficult to find the face of Christ in the person at the next desk, the stranger needing a seat on the bus, or the newly arrived migrant looking for help. And yet, we are called to do just that.

One of the lessons the missions teach is to look for the face of Christ in all children of God, wherever they live. It is also a lesson our faith calls us to re-learn daily.

To become a more intentional missionary disciple, consider asking yourself this question at the end of each day: Where did I see the face of Christ today?

The answer will amaze you.

St. Vincent de Paul at St. Peter’s

The SVdP Food Pantry is held every Friday from 2:30-4:00 PM at the St. Peter Parish Center, 10 Memorial Drive. Thank you to our friends and parishioners who have so kindly remembered the Society, and those we serve, through your generous private gifts, and donations left in the church donation boxes, located at each door of the church. Your kindness helps many.

We are currently in need of: Pasta Sauce, Hearty Soups, Cheerios, Frosted Flakes, Chicken Broth, and Chicken or Beef Ramen. Donations may be dropped off at the Parish Center or at the church.

If you are in need, please call the office at 508-746-0663 Ext. 307 and leave a message. We can help with resources and aid. You may also call us at this number if you are interested in volunteering for SVdP.

The Saint Kateri Food Pantry

Tuesdays from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM

The Food Pantry is always in need of any non perishable food items such as canned soups, pasta and sauce products, baking goods, cereals, canned tuna or chicken, boxed meals such as Hamburger & Tuna Helpers, canned vegetables and canned fruit and fruit juice. Liquid dish detergent, Kleenex, paper towels, toilet paper and cleaning products are very much needed. Personal hygiene products, such as deodorant, body wash/soap and shampoos are staples in every household and always appreciated!!

Thank you for your continued support of the food pantry!

Mary, Queen of Martyrs Parishioners, we need your help! On the 3rd Tuesday of each month, we receive a large order of food delivered from the Boston Food Bank. This delivery is generally about 3,000 lbs. Our staff is older and unloading this amount of products is difficult for the small group of people who usually help.

PLEASE consider taking an hour of your time to come by the church around 8:30 AM that day to help unload. We meet every third Tuesday of the month!

We now have a food donation box at Saint Kateri in the function hall by the office doorway. You may put your food donations in this box during office hours or after the weekend Masses.

Celebration of the Priesthood Dinner 2024 Update

For those interested in making a donation toward this year’s Celebration of the Priesthood dinner in support of the Clergy Trust for retired and ill priests, we are now happy to accept offerings of any amount. All donations will go to support a table sponsorship by Mary, Queen of Martyrs Parish for the dinner on Wednesday, September 18, 2024 at the Omni Seaport Hotel in Boston starting at 5:30 PM. Each donor will be entered, if they wish, into a lottery to attend the dinner with Fr. Joe and Fr. Paul. Donors may enter either one name, or the names of themself and their spouse. We will draw names in early September until we have a full table. Carpooling to the dinner will be available. The celebration promises to be a night of joy and thanksgiving as we continue to remember Fathers Schatzel and Rafferty and the good work that the Clergy Trust did to support them. Please call the parish office (508-746-063 ext 401) if interested.

On Friday, July 26, 2024, the flag at Our Lady of Lourdes was raised in memory of Robert Ashman. The flag was donated by Charlie and Joan Ashman.

Members from the All Are Welcome Ministry met recently to discuss LGBTQ Catholics: A Guide to Inclusive Ministry by Yumuen Trujillo, which addresses the basics of church doctrine, the need for this type of ministry, and the struggles of Catholics who are LGBTQ. Trujillo cites Pope Francis’ exhortation to be a church that encounters, listens to, and accompanies those in the church who are marginalized, judged and perhaps even shamed for who they are. As the Pope said, “The Church must step outside of herself…Jesus tells us, “Go into the world! Go! Bear witness to the Gospel!” But, what happens if we step out of ourselves? The same that can happen to anyone who comes out of the house and onto the street: an accident. But I tell you, I far prefer a church that has had a few accidents to a church that has fallen sick from being closed. Go out, go out!” We are committed to be fully welcoming in the name of Christ, following the example of Jesus in the Gospels, and we will post our meetings, our Masses, and our educational events in the bulletin – please join us!

A Student's Prayer

Dear God,

Help me remember that you’re always by my side

at school and all day long.

Help me be the best student I can be,

using all the gifts and talents you’ve given me.

Help me study well and often

– especially when I don’t feel like studying at all!

Help me finish all my homework – on time.

Help me listen to my teachers and coaches.

Help me play fair and play safely,

Help me be honest when I’m tempted to cheat.

Help me always tell the truth.

Help me be kind to everyone at school

and to treat others as I’d want them to treat me.

Help me make good friends

and help me be a good friend to others.

Help me know how I can help others

and to ask for help when I need it myself.

Help me love and respect, trust and appreciate my parents

- and to be honest with them.

Help me remember that you’re with me always, Lord,

and that you’ll never leave my side.

Amen.

A Parents' Prayer for Students

Dear Lord,

As my children leave for school,

I pray that you will keep them in your care.

Send your Spirit to open their minds

to all that is true and beautiful and good.

Help them to see the gifts and talents

you have given them and to use them well.

Help them to grow in knowledge and wisdom.

Help them to be kind to others

and lead others be kind to them.

Give their teachers patience and understanding

and help them teach what is just and true.

Send your angels to guide and guard my children

and to keep them from all harm.

Open their young hearts to your presence

and enfold them in your peace and protection.

Hold them in the palm of your hand

and bring them home safely at day's end.

Amen.

A Teacher's Prayer

Dear God,

A new school year is about to begin

and my classroom door will soon open

to the students you've assigned to my care...

Open my mind and heart to each of them

and especially to the ones

who will challenge me the most...

Help me challenge my students, all of them,

to study, to learn, to grow in knowledge

and even a little wisdom...

Help me remember, Lord,

how young my students are:

give me patience to help them grow up

and insight to know the help they need...

Help me to understand that sometimes

my students may not understand me:

may I be clear in the things I say and do,

and in how I say and do them…

My students don't know the burdens and worries

my heart brings to the classroom,

so help me remember, Lord,

how anxious and heavy my students' hearts may be...

Keep me from favoring any particular students, Lord,

except for those who most need my help...

Let my decisions in the classroom

be fair and just, honest and true...

Send your Spirit to fill me with gifts

of knowledge and understanding, counsel and wisdom…

Lord, open my mind and heart to my students' parents,

especially those who will challenge me the most...

Help me challenge parents to challenge their children

to study, to learn and to grow...

Help me to teach as you would, Lord:

help me be understanding when I need to be firm,

gentle in all things,

and patient until the last bell rings…

A new school year is about to begin, Lord,

and I wonder,

what will you teach me today?

Amen.

The Weekly Gospel

Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

"So the Pharisees and scribes questioned him, 'Why do your disciples not follow the tradition of the elders but instead eat a meal with unclean hands?' He responded, 'Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts. You disregard God's commandment but cling to human tradition.'"

Scripture Reflection for Sept. 1, 2024, Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Deacon Greg Kandra

Wednesday 28th of August 2024

Are we doers? The letter from James this Sunday lays it all on the line and reminds us what truly matters. Think showing up at church, saying prayers and dropping an envelope in the collection basket is enough? Think again.

"Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you and is able to save your souls," James wrote. "Be doers of the word and not hearers only... care for orphans and widows in their affliction and keep oneself unstained by the world."

This comes from the same writer who cautioned his readers later in the same letter that just believing isn't enough: "Faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead."

Looked at another way: If you want faith that is alive, you have to make it breathe and put it to work.

Scholars are divided about who, exactly, James was writing to, but his message clearly transcends time and place -- and resonates perfectly for us today alongside the excerpt we hear this Sunday from Mark's Gospel.

In a nutshell: We need to get busy.

This weekend, as we prepare for Labor Day, we're challenged to labor in the vineyard, to work on our faith by being people of action, charity, sacrifice, love. To do, not just hear. The letter from James is a timely lesson (in case we've forgotten over the lazy days of summer) that the Christian vocation doesn't take a vacation. We are never not living our faith. We are called to put it to work. We're not only supposed to show up at church on Sunday morning, but we have to open our hearts to those in need on Monday.

A Christian is called to do more than just listen to God's word; we need to take it to heart and act on it in the world. And we need to remember the source.

"All good giving and every perfect gift is from above," James noted, "coming down from the Father of lights."

This is where everything begins -- inspiration, guidance, courage, faith. From above, God offers us light to guide our way and direct our lives.

In his letter, James exhorted the early Christians to cooperate with God. For us, that means to put faith into action and prayerfully seek ways for God to use us.

What will we do?

To paraphrase St. Teresa of Avila, we are now his hands, his legs, and his body. What will we shape with those hands? Where will we walk with these legs? What will we bear on our shoulders? What will we do for others? What will we do for him?

For it is in the doing -- in the living of the Gospel, day by day, moment by moment, choice by choice -- that we make Christ present in the world.

It is in the doing that we are redeemed.

And it is in the doing that we can help, in some small way, to redeem the world. Faith and devotion to the will of God has to be more than skin-deep.

In the Gospel, Jesus quoted Isaiah and delivered a similar message to the scribes and Pharisees, who couldn't help but notice that some of the apostles didn't follow closely the Jewish laws of purification.

Their complaints struck Jesus as misguided.

"This people honors me with their lips," Jesus said, "but their hearts are far from me..." And he added: "You disregard God's commandment but cling to human tradition."

This reading should make all of us dig deep and take stock of how we hear God's word, and what we do with it.

What will we do?

That’s why USCCB has been a strong supporter of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), an independent, bipartisan agency, doing vital work to monitor and report on the worst violations of religious freedom globally.

USCIRF’s reauthorization expires on September 30, 2024. S. 3764 and H.R. 7025 would reauthorize USCIRF and would extend its modest funding until September 30, 2026. You can contact your representatives in Washington to urge their support – to learn how, visit
