Faith is not a Job

Faith is not a job, though it requires hard work by means of words and deeds. Faith is a very personal affair. Holiness is not simply given, but earned through constant conversion and perseverance. The secret is our constant abiding or remaining in the Lord Jesus and in his Church.

We need to grow constantly in faith and loving concern with each other and our fellow men, the kind of growth making us capable of laying down our life for a friend. Today is the feast day of St. Matthias. He was the one chosen by the eleven apostles to replace Judas, one of the twelve. His election was not out of popularity nor out of majority vote, but the fruit of intense prayer and trust in God of the community.

Since it is the Holy Spirit that truly discerns, they were able to choose Matthias, even though he was not chosen by Jesus to be among the twelve in the beginning. Yet, like the rest of the apostles, he has been following Jesus from the moment he was baptized in the river Jordan by John. This means that to be given an office or in order for one to be trusted of something by the Lord, one must be a follower, a believer or a witness of him.

The way we treat others should always be in a Christian way, that is, Christ’s way: treat everyone not as slaves but as friends, not as objects but subjects. That is our criteria of living and leading.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, may we desire and aspire nothing but you. Like St Matthias, may we not wait to be called or chosen before we start doing what is good and right. Give us the grace of initiative to help contribute building our family and parish community, a true Christian home, that we treat everyone not just friend but as brother and sister in your name.

Amen.

Remembering a year ago:
Bringing The Grotto to You

One year ago, in response to the growing pandemic, we began a series of daily emails called "A Place of Sanctuary: Bringing The Grotto to You." We closed completely a short time later, and that closure lasted for months.

The "Bringing The Grotto to You" series highlighted a feature at (or about) The Grotto each day. The series lasted for 88 days, the length of our closure.

We hope you enjoy this feature, "Looking Back", where we will share a piece of those emails every day for 88 days. Click the link below to view today's feature, which was originally shared this time last year.

Click on the video and take a moment to relax and experience the serenity of the sanctuary.

Today, flowers bloom beside the fountain which springs beneath the Assumption of Mary Statue.

Join Fr. Vidal Martinez, OSM, Rector of The Grotto, for a daily stroll through the garden.

Each day, enjoy photos and videos taken by Father Vidal, often during hours when the grounds are closed.

Today, we invite you to visit the newly-restored Chapel of Mary, which looks especially splendid set among the colorful shrubs of spring.

Catholic Bible Study Livestream

The Grotto is pleased to announce a new program, Catholic Bible Study.

Every Saturday at 10 a.m. we welcome everyone to join Fr. Edgar Benedi-an, OSM, via livestream from The Grotto, for an hour of bible study, giving those who desire an opportunity to deepen their knowledge about the word of God in the Sunday readings. This will provide time each week to deepen our knowledge and faith in the Lord Jesus and assist us in becoming matured Christians.

If you are unable to join us at that time, the video of the livestream will be available on our YouTube channel for the entire week, so you may watch at a more convenient time.

While it won't be possible for Father Edgar to entertain questions during the hour, viewers are encouraged to email their questions or comments to Father Edgar so he can address them during the week.

We will begin Saturday, May 21, the birthday of the Church, and study the Gospel for Pentecost Sunday.

Stay tuned for a link to the livestream, which will be shown via our YouTube channel.
