It was five minutes before 5:00pm on a cold spring evening. Jane and I were going through our end-of-day routine of turning off lights and putting away files, pens, etc. All of a sudden our front door entry buzzer started to chime and then frantic knocking on the glass door began. I walked towards the commotion and saw a frazzled gentleman. When he spotted me, in a raised voice, he asked, "Do you give out diapers and formula? I heard that you did!" I opened the door and he rushed in.
Out of breath and desperate, he explained to Jane and me that because it was the end of the month, he didn't have any money to purchase baby supplies for his infant daughter who was at this time of night home in her mother's care. He said that he had been to several charities that day and couldn't find what his baby girl needed. The diapers were depleted across town and the formula that she was prescribed was nowhere to be found.
I asked him the specifics of what he needed, and because of our generous donors, we at Daybreak had the diapers his baby wore and the formula she drank. When I let him know that we could supply everything she needed, he welled up with tears in his eyes, dropped into one of our reception chairs relieved that his search for the necessities for his child had ended successfully.
He first began profusely thanking us and then he apologized for keeping us past our closing, but of course Jane and I were more than happy to have been able to help this faithful father who was just trying to keep his sweet girl dry and well fed. As he walked out with bags of diapers, wipes and formula, he smiled and said, "God bless you."
Jesus promised us in Matthew 7:7 that "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you." This father was asking all day, seeking all day, and then knocking on Daybreak's door. With our donor's generous hearts and pocketbooks, this dad was given what his baby needed; he found what he was seeking; and we were there to open the door that he knocked on.
