Letter of Support for Cell Tower at Tower Hill

Rev. Dr. Terrill N Murff

I am writing on behalf of the Illinois Conference Council leadership to express our strong support for the installation of a cellular tower at Tower Hill Camp and Retreat Center.

As a beloved and vital ministry of the Illinois Conference of the United Church of Christ, Tower Hill serves as a sacred space for spiritual formation, youth development, and community-building. Ensuring the safety and accessibility of all who attend is of paramount importance.

Currently, the lack of reliable cell service in and around Tower Hill poses a significant concern. In the event of a weather emergency, medical crisis, or other urgent situation, swift and clear communication is not a luxury—it is a necessity. Installing a cell tower would greatly enhance reception in the area and significantly improve the camp’s ability to respond promptly to emergencies, while also ensuring that staff and visitors can stay connected with family and emergency services as needed.

In addition to safety, improved cell coverage would support the camp’s operations, including coordination among staff, communication with parents and guardians, and program facilitation. This upgrade aligns with Tower Hill’s commitment to hospitality, stewardship, and care for all who gather on its grounds.

We commend Tower Hill Camp’s leadership for taking this proactive step, and we urge local officials and stakeholders to approve and support the necessary efforts to install this vital infrastructure.

Pilgrim Park Camp and Conference Center

26449 1340 N. Ave, Princeton, IL 61356-8790

Christian Nationalism is an ideology that threatens both church and state. This retreat will explore this dangerous doctrine and how pastors might navigate, confront, and refocus its presence in their congregations and broader society.

Leave with an in-depth understanding of what Christian Nationalism is, the problems it poses, and practical pastoral responses to it. This event is intended to enrich the lives of all clergy, as well as lay leaders and anyone involved with church ministry.

Keynote Speaker, Beau Underwood, is the co-author of Baptizing America: How Mainline Protestants Helped Build Christian Nationalism (Chalice Press, 2024). The book has received several notable awards, including the 2024 top award for non-fiction from both the Religion Communicators Council and the Associated Church Press.

He serves as the senior minister of Allisonville Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Indianapolis, Indiana, and is also a contributing editor to Word&Way. ILUCC Disaster Coordinator, disaster@ilucc.org

Federal Emergency Management Agency, fema@service.govdelivery.com

The DHS Center for Faith announces that Federal funds of $110 million are now available to help houses of worship defend against attacks and protect themselves. This center carries out the policies and program priorities of the White House Faith Office, DHS and FEMA for faith and community-based organizations related to all-hazards preparedness, emergency and disaster response and recovery, safety, security, and human trafficking. E-mail us at Partnerships@fema.dhs.gov.

This $110 million, administered through FEMA’s Nonprofit Security Grant Program, may be used on security cameras, additional warning and alert systems, gates and lighting, access control systems, and training programs for staff. This round of awards will be provided to Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, and Jewish institutions. Emerging Strategies to Fight

AI Data Centers

Wednesday, September 10 at 12 pm CT

Emerging threats demand emerging strategies.

  • The rise of AI data centers has been a driver in the rise in power demand and increasing greenhouse gas emissions in the United States.
  • Moreover, the advanced cooling systems required by these data centers necessitate high levels of water consumption which can have serious ecological consequences, especially in places of water scarcity.
  • Finally, the technological components of AI data centers require the extracting of rare earth minerals in addition to generating enormous amounts of electronic waste.

The justice concerns intertwined with these issues are many when one considers the racial and economic disparities in bearing the cost of everything from increased utility bills to the harms of climate change.

To address what is at stake and point us toward emerging strategies, we will hear from

  • Anthony Rogers-Wright, Black Hive of Movement for Black Lives;
  • Nayyirah Shariff, Flint Rising;
  • Wanda Mosley, Black Voters Matter; and
  • Lindsay Harper, Arm in Arm.

Even if you cannot make our scheduled time of Wednesday, September 10 at 12 pm CT, still sign-up, and we will send you a recording afterward. Register online now!

NEW! Free and Fearless - Life and Leadership Lessons from Women of the Bible

Friendship Press ~ Publisher of the National Council of Churches

Throughout history, women have shaped families, communities, and nations with courage and conviction—none more so than the extraordinary women of the Bible featured in this book. From the matriarchs of the Old Testament to the faithful leaders of the New Testament, Free and Fearless brings their stories to life, offering timeless life and leadership lessons for today.

As a woman in business who spent four decades being the first female in almost every role she filled, author Madelon Maupin learned firsthand what it takes to confront cultural norms, lead teams, build consensus, and do it with strength, grace, grit, and courage. Drawing on her personal journey and the biblical wisdom that guided her, Maupin weaves practical lessons with inspiration from women like Deborah, Esther, Mary Magdalene, and others.

Spirit of Harm Reduction:

An Abridged Toolkit for Faith Leaders

Reducing Harm for Those Facing

Substance Use Addiction

Advocate Health Care

Taken from an interview with Fanya Burford-Berry,

Director - Heroin/Opioid Task Force

Harm reduction is a practical, compassionate approach that meets people where they are.

For faith leaders, harm reduction doesn’t mean endorsing unhealthy behaviors. It means walking alongside people as they make positive changes, offering care without judgment and inviting them into authentic relationships and community.

What Can Faith Leaders Do?

  1. Meet those facing substance use disorder where they are - Connect with the person first, and their challenge second. Recognize the humanity in these individuals and validate their authentic selves.
  2. Educate yourself about available resources - Seeking resources for substance use disorder will not only help you support those who need them, but will also connect you with resources for other social and emotional needs as well.
  3. Don't try to fix it, but connect people to resources - Share resources with those who need them. Just as you would connect someone with a medical need with the appropriate doctor, connect people facing substance use disorders with resources for healing.

Professional Boundaries and

Ministerial Self-Care

A Level 3 Synthesizing Course

Ethics are a set of principles for appropriate conduct. While often based on morals, which is the understanding of what is right and wrong, ethics differs from morality.

In this course, we will explore ethics and their application for professional pastoral ministers. We will consider the boundaries that define the relationships between professional pastoral ministers and congregants. We will also consider how the professional minister’s right to privacy helps to maintain appropriate boundaries and serves as an essential aspect for self-care.
