Principal's Message November 30, 2018

I am pleased to announce that Fountain Hills Unified School District students in grades 3-8 will be participating in the Scripps National Spelling Bee again this year. This week all FHMS students received a parent letter and spelling list to bring home. In case this letter has not yet reached you, I'd like to share the details with you.
The first step will be the grade level spelling test. Next week (sometime during December 3 - 7), all Middle School students will have the opportunity to take a 25-word spelling test in their English class (grades 6-8) or homeroom (grades 4-5). From there, the top scoring students in each grade will be invited to participate in the Middle School Spelling Bee during the school day on Friday, January 11, 2019. The 21 winners from the Fountain Hills Middle School Spelling Bee will then compete in the District Bee against other winning students from McDowell Mountain Elementary School. The District Bee will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. in the FHUSD Learning Center. Finally, the 1st place champion of the District Bee will compete in the Regional Spelling Bee at Deer Valley USD on February 22, 2019. The 1st runner-up of the District Bee will be the alternate. Our district representative will compete against students that were district winners from Cave Creek, Deer Valley, Paradise Valley, and Scottsdale.
Attached HERE are the grade level study word lists; the 25-word spelling test students take next week will come from this 100-word list. Students are encouraged to study and master all of the words for their grade level. It is also helpful for students to understand their meanings. Once the top scoring students have been determined, they will be notified and receive study words for the FHMS spelling bee which will follow the set rules and procedures of the Regional, State, and Scripps National Spelling Bees. Parents and students will receive more information and support materials at that time.

8th Grade Camp Surf Trip
Mrs. Schultz recently met with all 8th graders to discuss this year's trip to Camp Surf in Imperial Beach, CA, which will be May 20 - 22, 2019. Attached HERE is a copy of the brochure and all the documents that the students received. Deposits must be paid by December 12 in order to hold a spot. Space is limited, so don't wait until the last minute. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Schultz at 480-664-5434 or [email protected]. PTO Holiday Store is Back!
The 2018 PTO Holiday Store will be here next week (December 3 - 7). Hours will be before school starting at 8:00 am through last lunch. The store will be located in front of the FHMS library. Items will be priced from .25 to $6.00. This is a great opportunity for students to get some holiday shopping done for family and friends. Students may shop before school or during lunch.

Peanut Butter Drive
Kiwanis Builders Club and K-Kids are holding a peanut butter drive now through December 15. All jars of peanut butter that we collect will be donated to Extended Hands Food Bank here in town. Please bring unopened jars of peanut butter to FHMS and place them in the boxes near the office. Hungry families will be grateful.
