Home of the Falcons!
"Fountain Hills Middle School empowers students to learn, to care, and to succeed."
Principal's Message                                   January 25, 2019
The last two weeks have been exciting and busy here at FHMS! Last weekend the FHMS Creators Robotics Team hosted their first annual VEX IQ Robotics Tournament for Elementary and Middle School. We had 31 teams here at FHMS participating in Skills, Alliance on the fields, and with notebooks and design in judges interviews. The VEX IQ Challenge Next Level is played on a 4'x8' rectangular field. Two robots compete in the Teamwork Challenge as an alliance in 60 second long teamwork matches, working collaboratively to score points. Teams also compete in the Robot Skills Challenge where one robot takes the field to score as many points as possible. These matches consist of Driving Skills Matches, which are entirely driver controlled, and Programming Skills Matches, which are autonomous with limited human interaction.

We'd like to thank all of the parents who volunteered, as well as the robotics committee that includes Peter Conti, Kim Guerrette, Holly Brownstein and Debbie Andree. We are very grateful for the time and talents of our volunteers. I'd also like to thank our tireless Robotics advisors, Mary McDonald and Ivy Violette, who put on a very successful and well-run tournament!

On Tuesday this week, Mrs. Schultz and I, together with Deputy Brooks and Deputy Miller, took a group of 18, 6th - 8th grade students to the "Speak Up Stand Up Save a Life" conference at Grand Canyon University. This annual conference inspires students to Speak Up, Stand Up and Save a Life by emphasizing peer intervention and reporting: If one student is in trouble, another student needs to intervene and tell a trusted adult. It also seeks to dispel the stigma of being a "snitch" or a "tattletale" by informing students that reporting warning signs can often prevent school tragedies. By changing their mindsets, the conference empowers students to make a difference and take actions that could save another student's life.

Dean's Corner

Dear FHMS Families,

As we enter the end of our first month back at school, we hope everyone had a wonderful break and is finding their rhythm with getting to school on time and ready to learn! In this message we want to ensure that all of our families have received and understand the new attendance reporting guidelines. Earlier this month FHUSD Superintendant Dr. Robert Allen sent out information via the Falcon Focus newsletter that outlined updates to the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) attendance guidelines that are of utmost importance.
State law requires that all student absences and the reason for the absence be recorded by a school. Absences fall into the categories of excused and unexcused. Excused absences are defined as only one of the following: illness, doctor appointment, bereavement, family emergencies, major religious holidays of a family's faith, and out-of-school suspensions. An excused absence must be reported at the time of the absence by the parent or other person who has custody of the student.

All of this information is provided in greater detail under the "Attendance" option on the "Resources" tab of the FHUSD website.  If you have any questions regarding the attendance policy, please feel free to contact me at snkramer@fhacademics.org.

Thank you,

Samantha Kramer
Dean of Students

Fountain Hills Mentor Program

The Fountain Hills Mentoring Program formally began in 1996. The mentors, trained volunteers from our own town and surrounding areas, provide our students with personal one-on-one attention in a quiet location on campus such as the library. The mentors are screened and background checked as well as being trained by the Golden Eagle Education Foundation. The mission of the mentor program is to be a catalyst to encourage and assist the Fountain Hills educational system in offering our children the opportunity to reach their maximum potential through mentoring. We have mentors ready and waiting for your student. Please have your student stop by the front office to pick up the permission form today!
