Superintendent's Message November 30, 2018
Fountain Hills Coalition
Every parent knows there are times where difficult conversations with their children are necessary. One of the issues where parents have concerns for their child's welfare is certainly in the area of using illegal substances. It is helpful to know that as easy as it may seem for children to be exposed to these temptations, there are a wide range of resources readily available to assist parents in addressing the topic with their children.
The school district partners with the Fountain Hills Coalition-Youth Substance Abuse Prevention organization to help prevent youth substance abuse. District administrative staff and students serve on the Coalition along with community and civic members, town officials and law enforcement representatives. A visit to the Coalition website reveals access to excellent information to help parents initiate conversations with their children (
https://fhcoalition.org). The Parent Resources link is particularly helpful with access to "Talk Kits" about topics.
The Coalition also works directly with all of our schools coordinating specific clubs and activities. At McDowell Mountain and FH Middle School, Red Ribbon Week is an annual fall event where students participate in prevention activities and a variety of community organizations educate students about the dangers of illegal substances. "Above That" clubs are also active in the middle and high schools with district sponsors Patti Schultz (FHMS) and Matt Keating (FHHS) leading their students in discussions and activities to counter the negative influences of alcohol and drugs. The annual Essay Contest is conducted at the high school from January to February where hundreds of student essays are submitted and judged by an independent committee. Up to seventeen students receive a cash award for their entry with the first place winner receiving $1000. The Coalition also promotes the Safe Homes network where families pledge to protect their children from substance abuse.
As a school district we greatly appreciate the cooperative efforts of school and community partnerships such as this. A strong academic program requires a supportive social environment that helps to enrich the lives of children and provide them with a hopeful future.
