Congratulations to  New Student Council President,
M illie Duenas-Nelson!

MMES Student Council 3rd Grade President, Sawyer Hoid served an excellent term for the first semester of the 2019-2020 school year. However, Sawyer and her wonderful family moved out of state and we  will greatly miss them.

We have now appointed Millie Duenas-Nelson  as our new 3rd Grade President who won second place out of seven candidates in the August 2019 election. Student Council sponsor, Ms. Sam Elder, MMES staff, and the entire student body appreciate Millie for accepting this important position and we know she will be excellent as well!

School Spelling Bee

Every year, FHUSD participates in the Scripps National Spelling Beesystem including 3rd-8th grade students from MMES and FHMS.   The first step is the written test that all third graders took before winter break and resulted in 24 students participating in the bee on January 8.

Everyone did a marvelous job including
the top four students who will  compete in the district bee in the evening on Thursday, January 30 at 6:00 p.m. at the District Learning Center with 21 other winning students from FHMS:

MMES Spelling Bee Champion: Levi Lara
2nd Place: Angelo Latko
3rd Place: Ben Goodman
4th Place: DeMya Staten

In addition to the certificates that all participants received, MMES champion, Levi Lara was presented with a medal, a one-year subscription to Encyclopedia Brittannica Kids Online, and a Kindle Fire donated by the Peter and Theresa Conti Foundation.

Finally, the 1st place champion of the district bee will compete in the regional spelling bee in Deer Valley on February 20 involving winners from grades up to 8th grade from Deer Valley, Cave Creek, Paradise Valley, and Scottsdale.

Muffin's Musings

Happy New Year!

It's a new year and that means we are learning to put a new year at the top of our papers!  Not just any new year but a new decade! All my friends have to remember to write this new number... I wonder how many will still start with "19"?

My friends did such a great job collecting socks at school last month!  I was so excited to come up and just jump in the middle of this huge pile of soft socks.  So much softer than a pile of leaves! Our school collected 1537 pairs of socks for the homeless!  That's a lot of feet that will be much warmer this winter too. My friends at the Shoebox Ministry were so happy to get that many pairs of socks from us.  I know they appreciate the kindness from our school.

My mom, Ms. Smart said, "Muffin had so much taking 'muffins' to some of her friends!"  One class in each grade level who collected the most socks got to share muffins with me today.  It was a lot of fun because a few of my friends dropped crumbs on the floor for me. My mom didn't like me running around and cleaning up the floor, but I know Rob and Patrick (our custodians) will love me!  The blueberry muffins were the best!

We have so many new friends at our school this week.  Today I went around and introduced myself to them and gave them a little kiss.  I just want them to feel welcome here and love coming to school like I do. I get so excited every week just thinking of seeing my friends.  School is so important and all of the teachers have exciting things to show them.
