My mission is to walk through treatment with every patient from beginning to end. This new aspect of my career will allow me to make a life-changing  contribution to the welfare of my patients."

Carissa Regnerus

The South Dakota Oral Health Coalition steering committee meeting was held on Thursday, August 23 in Pierre and three of your SDDHA board members were in attendance.  Updates from the legislative session on SDF and the scope of RDA's were given and a task force was put in place to be prepared for possible anti water fluoridation efforts; I have been appointed to this task force and will keep you all abreast of any happenings.
An August 20, 2018 PEW report indicated that children at-risk for caries may be suffering unnecessarily because of practice act restrictions. The report entitled: When Regulations Block Access to Oral Health Care, Children at Risk Suffer; The school dental sealant program dilemma addresses additional barriers to receiving sealants such as Medicaid reimbursement, prior exam rules, and states that don't allow hygienists to bill directly for services.  The Oral Health Coalition's Sealant Task Force has indicated that many promotions of sealants have been going on in SD.
On June 15, 2018, the SDDA met in Pierre. Southeast Technical Institute gave a presentation on the proposed Dental Assisting Apprenticeship Program and the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) certification process was discussed. At this point the board has denied their application to become a board approved program per ARSD 20:43:08:05.The Board encouraged SETI to explore CODA accreditation.  The next dental board meeting will be held on October 12, 2018. The SDDHA legislative committee has been working collaboratively with Paul Bachand, our lobbyist, who will guide us in any upcoming legislative issues.

Lobby Day will be January 28th, 2019 from 10:30am-1:00pm CT. We are doing a lunch this year in an attempt to catch the legislators who arrive later in the morning on Monday. We will be in one room which will give a larger impact with a smaller attendance. We are looking into making posters and/or playing an ongoing video to present oral health statistics for the legislators to highlight some of the oral health issues to contend with in our state. Our president is waiting to hear whether the South Dakota State Board of Dentistry will include attendance at Lobby Day and activities of the like as CE hours in professional growth and development. We are hoping to have good representation of SD dental hygienists in Pierre this year! If any SDDHA members would like to be a part of this day in any way, please contact me, Carissa Regnerus, at
