Dietary Intervention Federal Grant Award Announcement

We are excited to share that the Carter Burden Network, in partnership with the Rockefeller University and Clinical Directors Network, has been awarded a substantial two year federal grant from the Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Community Living to implement a dietary intervention to improve cardiovascular outcomes for seniors.

Serving 5,000 seniors each year, CBN provides 300,000 meals annually through congregate meals at its senior centers, as well as its home delivered meal program. By implementing the plant-focused DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet at two of our senior centers, which has been shown to lower blood pressure in as little as 14 days, we expect to improve our nutritional services and positively impact health outcomes for seniors. CBN is one of five organizations in the country chosen to implement and pilot this initiative.

Annual Belmont Racetrack Trip
Seniors, staff, and Board Members posed with the winning jockey of the "Carter Burden Network" race at the annual Belmont Racetrack trip held on September 19th. Each year, this much-anticipated outing including a lavish buffet lunch is generously sponsored by a CBN Board Member for over 100 seniors!
National Senior Citizens Day

August 21st was National Senior Citizens Day, a day to honor older adults and recognize their valuable contributions to our communities. Each of our 4 centers held special activities to celebrate this special day.
KIND Day of Service
We had so much fun with the volunteers from KIND Sna cks who came to our Covello center for a Day of Service that included an Ice Cream Social and Fall Basket Crafting with the seniors. These baskets were filled with healthy KIND Snacks and other goodies and were delivered to homebound seniors in the community. KIND volunteers also set up a technology station to answer seniors' questions about their phones and tablets. We even had a group outside cleaning and beautifying our garden!

National Falls Prevention Awareness Day

Falls are a common cause of injury among older adults. On September 26th, each of our 4 senior centers raised awareness around this important issue by hosting workshops in partnership with New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center, Columbia University School of Occupational  Therapy and Hospital for Special Surgery.

Topics included Falls and Injury Prevention, Medication Management, and Skin and Foot Care.
Senior Students Graduate From Technology Class
A class of senior students graduated from the Social Media and Explore Tech
computer course which is provided by OATS (Older Adults Technology Services).
Congrats grads!
