FACULTY IN THE NEWS Engineering Research Collaboration Awarded $1.18M Grant for Land Use/Climate Change Study Dr. Gang Chen, professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, will lead a team of experts throughout the United States to conduct the study. Dr. Chen has been teaching at the College of Engineering since 2005 and will work with agricultural and biological engineers, environmental chemists, forestry specialists and economists. Engineering student awarded highly selective Hollings Scholarship  A FAMU-FSU Engineering student was chosen from a competitive pool of national applicants to receive the Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship from the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). As a Hollings Scholar, FSU rising junior Jennifer Magi will receive an award that includes up to $19,000 of academic assistance over two years and a 10-week, full-time paid summer internship at a NOAA research facility of her choosing. read more

Civil engineering alumna tapped to promote diversity, inclusion as associate dean at Bucknell Engineering Dr. Terri Norton has come a long way since earning her doctorate in civil engineering (2005) at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.  On July 1, 2018, Norton begins a new job as the Bucknell University College of Engineering Associate Dean for Students & Strategic Initiatives, a role in which she will support students and promote diversity and inclusion. read more  Civil engineering graduate student Garit Poire to receive 2018 FSU Graduate Student Leadership Award Garit Poire, a civil engineering graduate student at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, was recently selected as one of four recipients of the 2018 Graduate Student Leadership Award. This award is given each year by FSU’s Graduate School and Congress of Graduate Students and “recognizes outstanding graduate student leaders who are making a positive difference in their scholarly/creative work, campus and wider communities.”

FAMU-FSU College of Engineering ACSE student chapter wins big at regional awards In mid-March 2018, Dr. Raphael Kampmann, faculty adviser for the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering’s American Society for Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Chapter, received a handful of very exciting letters from the professional society. The communiques announced that the student chapter had earned not only one, but four national awards for ASCE student chapters. In addition, the chapter was nominated for the prestigious Ridgway Award, which is awarded to the single most outstanding Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers. “We want to congratulate our ASCE Student Chapter for being selected as the recipient for the 2018 ASCE Distinguished Chapter in our region--they are great ambassadors for our college,” FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Dean J. Murray Gibson said.  read more

Drs. Tawfiq, Wekezer recognized for lasting contributions as faculty of civil and environmental engineering The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering recognized two faculty members with awards at its student-faculty banquet on April 17 at Tallahassee’s Sittig Center. Those awards went to Kamal Tawfiq, in recognition of his service as department chair and to Jerry Wekezer for lifetime contributions to the department. read more Senior Design Lab Renovations Update In Spring 2018, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering established a goal of enlarging and renovating its senior design lab. The senior design lab provides collaborative workspace and computer equipment to support students completing their capstone design projects. The new lab will have additional workstations, integrated technology, a small meeting space to facilitate group presentations, and modular furniture to foster collaboration.  The names of donors who make a gift of $500+ will be displayed on the donor appreciation plaque inside the lab.    Just under $5,000 was raised toward the design lab project during FSU’s Great Give, spring of 2018. Twenty-six donors participated, including alumni, faculty and parents. To date, over $15,000 in gifts have been received, with more pledges awaiting fulfillment.  Download a PDF explaining the project Make a Contribution
