Welcome to COMMunity, the biannual newsletter reporting on new and exciting developments in our department.
|
|
Season’s greetings to all: students, alumni, colleagues, and friends! Welcome to another edition of
COMM(unity)
, the official newsletter of the Manhattan College Communication Department. We’re starting to get pretty good at this, and we have to thank, among many others, our trusty student assistant, Olivia Paladino, who has been the driving student force in marshaling the troops, copyediting the copy, and even getting me to write this note.
This newsletter is, after all, written and produced by our students, as this is one of the many things they learn, practice, and plan to do with the education we provide. It’s also their chance to show off what they can, and do, do – not to mention to show off how well they can do it.
With this brief introductory column, I also get a chance to crow about all of the other things our students are doing, all of the great successes they are having, and even some of the important developments happening here in Leo Hall. For instance, I can tell you about our two new full-time faculty members: Nick Gilewicz, who just arrived here as a freshly-minted Ph.D. from the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Pennsylvania to run our journalism concentration, and who is also the new Advisor to
The Quadrangle
; and Holly Hepp-Galvan, who is here as a Visiting Instructor for the year while we continue our search for a full-time faculty member to spearhead the development of our new sports media production concentration. (For those of you who have been paying attention, Holly has been a member of our part-time faculty from the very beginning.)
Speaking of that sports media production concentration, I can tell you that the College’s new Mobile Production Unit, or “MPU,” is scheduled to arrive outside Draddy Gymnasium around the same time the spring semester begins. The MPU will serve as a lab classroom for students in the new concentration, as well as the remote production facility for the production of Jaspers men’s and women’s home basketball games starting during the 2019-2020 season. (And that’s
just
for starters.) Also, while I am writing about our concentrations, I need to mention that we just succeeded in moving through yet another new concentration in “integrated marketing communications,” which will take effect as of next year’s catalog and combine the best of our advertising and public relations concentrations.
With respect to our alums, I should tell you about two wonderful programs our faculty ran just recently. Michael Grabowski brought back a group of “women in media production” back in October. The evening included ten alumni, all of whom are recent graduates, and all of whom are working in the television and related industries, for brand names such as CBS, NBC, and
Saturday Night Live
. In November, Arshia Anwer, advisor to our chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America, helped the PRSSA Board to coordinate another evening with recent, successful graduates in entertainment, sports, and brand P.R. In addition, our chapter of the American Advertising Federation, under the auspices of advisor Rebecca Kern-Stone, also coordinated their Fall event in November, featuring Megan Hooper from bSmart, a community platform that “spotlights women who are doing extraordinary things and connects them with women who aspire to do the same.”
Finally, on a sad note, I want to dedicate this issue of
COMM(unity)
to Tom Callahan, former instructor of journalism, who was a member of our community for three-and-a-half years, and who passed away suddenly this past summer. Tom was an alum of the College – a dyed-in-the-wool Jasper through and through – and valedictorian of his class. He was also a reporter for the
New York Times
for two decades. Most importantly, however, he was a good man – a real
mensch
– and a tireless fighter for social justice, for the working man, and for all of the overlooked citizens and underdogs of our world.
We miss him, and we wish that his spirit flies on.
