Opening the Doors
to the Big White Barn
Although it may not be obvious, Hilltop Farm is now much closer to achieving FOFAH's goal of being abl e to host events in our historic B ig White Barn!

During this year, the structure supporting the upper level of the barn has been reinforced to allow for numbers of  guests, the massive barn doors have been reversed to facilitate emergency exit, and the barn floor just inside the doors is being refinished so the barn is easier to enter.

Upgrades to the fire detection and alarm system and the final phase of the fire suppression system should be complete by Spring 2020.

Transportation at the Farm
Because of a generous donation from an anonymous HFPG donor, FOFAH  now owns a custom electric ADA shuttle cart. This will allow us to bring people right up to the barn from the handicapped parking area.  All of these upgrades means that FOFAH could be ready to host exhibits and events inside the barn in 2020.

Photo Garden
Volunteers have created a lovely photo garden east of the corncrib. It's a treat to sit there and enjoy the birds.

The Corn Crib
The corn crib got a whole new roof this summer as well as some new siding and a stairway. If you have always wondered what was in there, check it out!

Herb Garden
The Suffield Girl Scouts have started growing culinary herbs for Suffield Community Aid. Their creative garden is in an old concrete feed trough just north of the corncrib.

Chickens in the Coop
Suffield High School Agriscience student Sydney Eitel is bringing chickens back to the coop! Many thanks to the Suffield Rotary Club for assisting the team in reroofing part of the coop and helping make the space chicken-ready!

Bald Eagles - Good News
The 2019 Bald Eagle nesting season in Connecticut has come to a close and the results are truly spectacular. The number of Bald Eagles nesting in our State has continued to increase and the 2019 tally is a testament that conservation and protection works. Bald Eagles had been nearly wiped out in the lower 48 states due primarily to an an overuse of pesticides. Following the banning of DDT in 1972 it took 20 years for the first documented nesting territory to be established in Connecticut. This was in 1992 and that nest produced 2 chicks.
Fast forward to 2019 and this year there were 64 active territories with 45 successful nests. Of those 45 nests, 81 chicks were produced! Every single County in our State can now be proud to say that there is a nesting pair of Bald Eagles in their County.
Be proud Connecticut and watch the skies... you're bound to see one of these glorious, majestic birds soaring over your town!
