UBalt's 2021-22 AstroBees

This academic year marks the fourth consecutive year that The University of Baltimore is proud to have a team of students participating in the NASA Spacesuit User Interface Technologies for Students (S.U.I.T.S.) Design Challenge. NASA S.U.I.T.S. challenges students to develop cutting edge display and control solutions within augmented reality (AR) environments for use on the lunar surface. This year's AstroBees team is currently working on their entry for the 2022 competition.

You can meet the 2021-22 team and keep up with their progress throughout the year by following them on Instagram @ubalt_astrobees.

Congratulations to Taneisha Carter and Christine Wolf, the winners of the 2021 Lassen Scholarship Award. The Lassen Scholarship is awarded annually to a student(s) who has demonstrated academic excellence, is successfully juggling the competing demands of school, work, and family, and is preparing for a career as a counseling psychologist. Both Taneisha and Christine will graduate from the M.S. in Applied Psychology, Counseling Psychology Concentration in December.

MFA Sweet Sixteen Festival

On Oct. 24, the MFA in Creative Writing & Publishing Arts program celebrated its sixteenth anniversary with a Sweet Sixteen Festival, held outdoors at Racers' Cafe in Parkville, MD. The event honored graduates of the MFA program and their achievements, and brought them together to catch up and reconnect. In addition to publishing nationally recognized fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, alums of the program work at libraries, bookstores, publishers, magazines, websites, reading series, book festivals and writing programs. They are an essential part of the literary community in Baltimore and beyond.

One hundred fifty people gathered in a safe and celebratory way, recapturing some of the magic that was lost to a year of quarantine. There were featured readings by 10 of the most celebrated graduates of the program, with their books for sale by the Ivy Bookshop. There was a vibrant open mic and a table featuring the works of students who graduated during the pandemic and were unable to showcase their final projects during our usual public capstone event. Attendees also signed up to be part of the Plork Pages, an ongoing alumni directory that will allow grads to make the most of our alumni family through networking for future opportunities and projects.

Design Students Collaborate with Entrepreneurship Fellows on Real-World Products

For their capstone project, three master's students (now graduates) in the Integrated Design program—Jasmine Loyal, Richard Neal and Nett Smith—worked with Rebecca Thompson, an Entrepreneurship Fellow, to develop and design strategic marketing materials for Thompson’s emerging business.

Crate Craft & Co. is a DIY craft subscription box service

that brings creativity to your doorstep with curated craft projects and provides community through engaging classes and social programs. In preparing a suite of branding elements for the company, the design team also researched core values, target audiences, competition and social marketing design and techniques. The group was named the winner of the 2021 Erin Kvedar Memorial

Seminar Award, which is awarded each year to the design team with the best capstone presentation.

This is the third year in a row that teams of Integrated Design students have supported emerging businesses from the Merrick School's Entreprenuership Fellows Program. To learn more about this collaboration, read "Partnered for Success" in the latest issue of UBalt Magazine.
