On Nov. 18, we had the privilege to host the Greater St. Petersburg Area Economic Development Corporation for a Fireside Chat with Cathie Wood in Lynn Pippenger Hall. The EDC welcomed Wood with open arms, excited for what is in store for St. Petersburg as a result of her moving her company, ARC Invest to the area.
Partnership between USF and Tampa Bay Wave to make the region a major fintech hub
An innovative multi-year partnership between the University of South Florida Muma College of Business and Tampa Bay Wave is launching the FinTech|X Accelerator with its first cohort to be selected in 2022.

This accelerator is designed to assist high-potential, high-growth startups in the fintech or financial technology industry through mentoring, pitch coaching, and investment training. The overall goal is to transition startups to sustainable, scalable, and profitable businesses. Read more. To apply, visit Tampa Bay Wave.
Student Spotlight: Xiomara Montes Gil headed to NYC for JPMorgan Global Finance Internship
Xiomara Montes Gil, a junior majoring in finance and business analytics, has earned a spot in the JPMorgan Global Finance Internship program in New York City this summer.

“The thought of working for a company like JPMorgan was completely unimaginable,” said Gil, who is a student at the Kate Tiedemann School of Business and Finance, a part of the Muma College of Business.

She applied for several other opportunities, thinking the summer program at JPMorgan was just a dream. Gil credits her peers in Delta Sigma Pi for encouraging her to apply to roles with larger companies. Read more.
The Student Managed Investment Fund Reaches Milestone, Exceeds $1.5M
Under one consolidated Muma College of Business, USF now holds stocks in two student managed investment funds, one on the Tampa campus and one on the St. Petersburg campus. The Applied Securities Analysis student managed investment fund now exceeds $1.07 million. The Merrill Lynch Wealth Management Center fund has grown to over $600,000.

Alumni Spotlight

Sam Armes has a front-row seat to the cryptocurrency revolution taking place in Florida. The 2018 USF graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in finance is the founder and president of the Florida Blockchain Business Association, a nonprofit that is helping stage a bitcoin and blockchain summit next month in Tampa. Ethics Competition: The Importance of Ethics in Real Estate
Greg Smersh sponsored the second annual essay contest for undergraduate business students with the help of Graduate Assistant Vincent Liu. This year, the focus was on "The Importance of Ethics in Real Estate," roughly 40 students signed up to share their thoughts and philosophies on this important topic.

The winners are:
First-place $1,000 scholarship - Lan Phan, Pre-Finance major
Second place $750 scholarship - Logan Standard, Information Systems-Management major
Third place $500 scholarship - Meredith Rubin, Pre-Management major

Given the outstanding submissions and close competition, there was also a tie for fourth place. Finance major Stanley Varughese and Marketing major Carlos Terrazas will each receive scholarships of $250.
