Fall 2023 | Breaking Ground:

On the Homefront with Kansas Housing

Fall is here! The cool nights and warm days are delightful after the blazing summer. We’ve been busy harvesting pumpkins and apples at the Vincent home. Months ago, butterflies and honeybees quietly pollinated the plants and we’re enjoying the fruits of their labors today (honeybees pollinate 80% of all flowering plants in the US!).

Reflecting on bees, I heard a story recently how millions of bees spilled onto a highway and local authorities called a bee keeper to save the day. I was intrigued by the beekeeper’s response: rather than fleeing in panic (as I would have done!), he began methodically putting the hives back together on the trailer. The stinging and anxious bees immediately started going back into the hive – millions of them. Apparently bees produce something called the “come-home pheromone” – the first bee returning to the hive signaled to its millions of brethren that the coast is clear; it’s time to come home.

Isn’t that what fall tells us as the days get colder and shorter? It’s time to come home where it’s safe, warm, and cozy. Isn’t that why our work at Kansas Housing has always been and will always be vital? We all have a need to come home. There are times that we feel busy as bees unlocking home for those we serve, but the fruits of our labor have never been sweeter. Savor it.

KHRC Celebrates 20 Years!

KHRC was established July 1, 2003, and we’ve been celebrating our 20th anniversary all year long! This spring we hosted a statewide youth art contest inviting K-12 Kansas students to share their vision of home. Finalists were recognized at a ceremony at the Kansas Capitol during National Homeownership Month in June, and their artwork remained on display in the Rotunda.

KHRC hosted a Roaring 20th Anniversary Reception to kick off the Kansas Housing Conference on Aug. 21. Attendees mingled with current and past KHRC staff and leadership, dressed to the nines in 1920's style. Guests were also treated to the premier of KHRC's 20th anniversary video celebrating two decades of unlocking home.

Kansas Leads Nation in Homeowner Assistance

As the Kansas Homeowner Assistance Fund (KHAF) program winds down, the state is celebrating a big milestone: In the first quarter of 2023, Kansas led the country in assistance provided to homeowners, with nearly all allocated funds (96.3 percent) awarded to Kansans in need.

Additional data revealed Kansas' foreclosure starts for the first half of 2023 were down significantly to just 34 percent of 2019 levels, among the lowest of all states. This could be related to the prompt distribution of KHAF support.

Solar for All

KHRC is in the process of applying for the Solar for All funding opportunity through the US EPA Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF). To help us build our proposal, webinars with potential partners and public stakeholders were held in September.

The application deadline is this month, with awards announced in July 2024. If KHRC is awarded funding, we anticipate services to begin mid-2025. The program would serve qualified low-income households and disadvantaged communities, estimating to reach more than 2,500 Kansas households.
