The Blue Ridge Discovery Center is the home to what once was known as Konnarock Training School, established in 1924 by the Women’s Missionary Society of the United Lutheran Church in America, educated children from isolated mountain communities. Lutheran missionary Kenneth Killinger and lay leader Laura Lu Scherer Copenhaver had advocated the school’s founding as a crucial step toward meeting the spiritual, intellectual, and physical needs of the people of Appalachia.

Built on land donated by the Hassinger Lumber Company, Konnarock was a regional boarding school for girls but also provided day classes for local children. In 1936 a medical clinic was added to serve the surrounding community. Konnarock Training School closed in 1959.

The building was restored in and now is home to the Blue Ridge Discovery Center.

High Country Campground

High Country Campground has Direct access to trails of Mt. Rogers, Whitetop Mountain & Appalachian Trail, access to 40 x 80 building, griddle, electricity & water hook-ups, 25 camper sites, 35 barn stalls & 25 tent sites. One Camper on site available for rent with queen mattress. Ceramic tile showers (VERY CLEAN), covered stalls (10×10), full water and electric hookup sites, nearby fishing, swimming and hiking. Nearby dining, as well as, B&B just minutes away, but the Camp Restaurant is dependent upon campground occupancy. If you get off the path during bad weather and need an Emergency Hostel our campground is available.
