Fall 2024

Dear MTL Community,

Welcome back! I hope your summer was both relaxing and invigorating, providing you with the chance to recharge. It’s wonderful to see everyone returning to campus, filling the halls and classrooms with energy and enthusiasm for the new semester.

As we closed out the spring semester, it was a joy to see so many of you at the End of Semester BBQ and the 2024 Graduation Reception. These events were a testament to the incredible work and achievements of our MTL graduates.

Looking ahead, we have an exciting lineup of events this semester. The MIT Deep Tech Career Fair, scheduled for September 19, 2024, is a fantastic opportunity for students interested in career or internship opportunities to connect with representatives from companies at the forefront of electronics, quantum-computing, materials, and other deep-tech sectors.

Additionally, we will be hosting the second MIT Workshop on Small Display Technologies on October 21, 2024, at the Schwarzman College of Computing. Please stay tuned for more details as the date approaches.

On November 20, 2024, we will celebrate a significant milestone—MTL’s 40th Anniversary. This all-day event will highlight the groundbreaking research produced at MTL over the past four decades, and look forward to the exciting opportunities ahead. The day will culminate with a special dinner and reception, featuring distinguished guests and speakers. You can find the latest information, including the agenda, on our 40th Anniversary website. I sincerely hope you’ll be able to join us for this memorable occasion.

Save the date for the 2025 Microsystems Annual Research Conference (MARC), which will be held January 14-15, 2025 at the Omni Mount Washington Resort. I am excited to announce the co-chairs for MARC2025 - Mingran Jia, a 3rd year PhD in Prof. Ruonon Han's group and Emma Wawrzynek, a 3rd year PhD in Prof. Jeffrey Lang's group. If you are interested in being a part of the planning committee for MARC2025, we'd love to have you, please reach out to the co-chairs.

Lastly, I am pleased to share the 2024 Microsystems Annual Research Report with you. My heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to this year’s report. It showcases the tremendous progress across more than 150 research projects in micro- and nanotechnology, spanning areas from advanced semiconductor materials and new devices to integrated photonics, circuits, insect-scale micro robots, biomedical systems, and AI hardware accelerators.

Wishing you all a successful and fulfilling semester ahead!

Sincerely,

Tomás Palacios
