Where are you from?
I was born in Torreón, Mexico, but grew up in Georgetown, Texas.
Were you involved in theatre when you were in high school? Any past theatre experience on stage or behind the scenes?
I was briefly involved in my high school’s drama department during my junior and senior years. I fell in love with creating imaginary circumstances and incorporating that into my singing since that’s how I initially fell in love with performing.
What are the reasons you decided to enroll at Austin Community College? What is your current program of study?
Some of the reasons why I enrolled at Austin Community College were because it is much more cost-efficient, it sets you up to focus on the classes you’d want to take in University instead of spending a lot of money on introductory courses, and I heard great things about the music program there as well. I am a vocal performance major and adore the professors there because they all come from extensive experience and high educational backgrounds, and they’re passionate about teaching everyone about music regardless of where they come from or what’s in their pocket
Any favorite classes in the Drama Department and why? Important things you have learned so far?
So far, I have only taken one acting class at ACC, Acting 1. It is a very well-structured introduction to observation, shaking off the initial desire to “try to act.” People misinterpret acting as pretending when, in reality, it’s all about believing and making sure someone can be genuine in their behavior without the element of surprise. I have learned many different approaches to achieving that balance and am excited to learn more in the near future.
You were cast in our Fall 2024 production of Appeal: The New American Musical of Mexican Descent. Can you tell us a bit about the character you played? And what the rehearsal process was like?
In Appeal, I was cast in many minor roles, but my primary role was that of Nora, Gus’s second wife. Although I knew the audience would most likely not be rooting for my character due to relationship issues within the show, Nora had this duality in being just and ahead of her time while being controversial. She was Gus’ comfort and arguably had the most open-minded approach to everything and anyone she encounters in the show. The rehearsal process was tedious due to the many vital details in the show. Still, it was heavily rewarding to further understand my Mexican heritage and how the state I grew up in treated people who looked like me not too long ago and, worse, were allowed to do so legally.
