Fall 2024 End of Semester Updates from ACC Drama!

Letter from the Chair

Welcome to the end of Fall 2024.

I hope that you had an expansive, productive semester. The Drama Department at ACC was busy this fall. I am excited to attend the fifteenth year of our end of the semester showcase. What started as a few monologues, a couple of scenes, and lighting plot a decade and a half ago, has evolved into an evening of excellence from across the department.

This Fall, we had the good fortune to produce an original musical written by former chair and Drama instructor Amparo Garcia-Crow. Appeal: The New American Musical of Mexican Descent tells the story of civil rights attorney Gus Garcia, exploring the complexities of human nature, and the centrality of the Mexican American experience to the character of our nation. We are excited to see it again as it premieres on ACCTV next spring. Stay tuned for details. We also hosted visits from the Texas State Theater and Dance Department, and from the IATSE Local Stage Hand Union. These were wonderful opportunities for current students to begin charting their pathway beyond the Hallowed Halls of Highland.

Next spring, we will visit Christmas in February as the Department presents Paula Vogel’s A Long Christmas Ride Home. We will also offer a full range of performance, tech, and design classes in the spring and into next summer. You might even see something about a musical theater cabaret and new play reading. Once again, stay tuned.

.

I hope you can join us for the fall showcase on Thursday, December 12 at 7:30pm. Curtain Fall is always a wonderful event, and a fitting end to a semester of labor in the arts. We will present selections from our performance classes, and installations of design projects from our tech courses. A bit of theater, light refreshments, and an opportunity to gather. I hope you can join us.

Have a lovely holiday break, y’all

The Long Christmas Ride Home

By Paula Vogel

Directed by Jamie Rogers

“One snowy Christmas Eve three children and their parents take an ill-fated ride to their grandparent’s house. In The Long Christmas Ride Home, past and present collide in the back of the family sedan. The play offers brief, illuminating glimpses of the children's future lives, but always comes back to that one fateful night, the claustrophobic car, and the moment a family shattered. Combining superb storytelling, music and puppetry The Long Christmas Ride Home explores the fragile and fraying bonds of family.”

Interview by Jamie Rogers

Where are you from?

I was born in Torreón, Mexico, but grew up in Georgetown, Texas.

Were you involved in theatre when you were in high school? Any past theatre experience on stage or behind the scenes?

I was briefly involved in my high school’s drama department during my junior and senior years. I fell in love with creating imaginary circumstances and incorporating that into my singing since that’s how I initially fell in love with performing.

What are the reasons you decided to enroll at Austin Community College? What is your current program of study?

Some of the reasons why I enrolled at Austin Community College were because it is much more cost-efficient, it sets you up to focus on the classes you’d want to take in University instead of spending a lot of money on introductory courses, and I heard great things about the music program there as well. I am a vocal performance major and adore the professors there because they all come from extensive experience and high educational backgrounds, and they’re passionate about teaching everyone about music regardless of where they come from or what’s in their pocket

Any favorite classes in the Drama Department and why? Important things you have learned so far?

So far, I have only taken one acting class at ACC, Acting 1. It is a very well-structured introduction to observation, shaking off the initial desire to “try to act.” People misinterpret acting as pretending when, in reality, it’s all about believing and making sure someone can be genuine in their behavior without the element of surprise. I have learned many different approaches to achieving that balance and am excited to learn more in the near future.

You were cast in our Fall 2024 production of Appeal: The New American Musical of Mexican Descent. Can you tell us a bit about the character you played? And what the rehearsal process was like?

In Appeal, I was cast in many minor roles, but my primary role was that of Nora, Gus’s second wife. Although I knew the audience would most likely not be rooting for my character due to relationship issues within the show, Nora had this duality in being just and ahead of her time while being controversial. She was Gus’ comfort and arguably had the most open-minded approach to everything and anyone she encounters in the show. The rehearsal process was tedious due to the many vital details in the show. Still, it was heavily rewarding to further understand my Mexican heritage and how the state I grew up in treated people who looked like me not too long ago and, worse, were allowed to do so legally.

Do you attend school and have outside employment? If so, how do you find a balance between work and drama department involvement?

I am taking introductory and a few performing arts classes at ACC that will sum up my associate's degree and set me up for transfer. I currently work as a receptionist at Amar Beauty Salon in Georgetown, TX, but my hours are highly flexible, and I try to work when I can. I balance my responsibilities by giving myself time to create or do something for myself at least once a week because it's important to find quiet within the chaos of one's life.

Any overall advice to give to current Drama Majors on ways to get them involved in the Department?

Some general advice to get involved would be to talk to the professors here, look at the ACC drama department website for more information on upcoming shows and events, and don’t be afraid to ask someone already involved. Many great connections in ACC might pique your interest and motivate you to begin or continue your passion for the theatre.

What does the future hold?

I plan on transferring to a four-year university, preferably in New York, where I can start auditioning, taking classes, making further connections, and getting as involved with the musical theatre industry as possible. My ultimate goal is to create a seed of creativity every day for the rest of my career, and I’m excited to begin embarking on that journey.
