Message from Autism Communities Chairwoman, Doreen Jaggs

As we near the end of 2024, I am proud to reflect on the remarkable progress Autism Communities has made over the past year. One of our most exciting successes was our 2nd Annual Nine & Dine Golf Outing, which raised $75,000, doubled the number of golfers from last year, and increased funding to further support our programs. During the event, we proudly presented Paul & Grace Pedretti with the Pathways to Inclusion Award, recognizing their tireless dedication and unwavering support towards inspiring a world built without barriers. We also had the honor of presenting the Community Impact Award to the Suffolk County Police Acting Commissioner Robert E. Waring and the Suffolk County Police Department, acknowledging their invaluable support and commitment to our Friend Responders Campaign. The success of the event could not have been possible without the dedication of our supporters, volunteers, and the community at large. Thank you to everyone who made this event possible. Plans are underway for 2025 and we look forward to seeing you next year!

Our Friend Responder Campaign continues to build momentum, and we look forward to deepening our community partnerships through the liaison visits we are scheduling in October. These one-on-one visits between residents and first responders from the Suffolk County Police Department are an essential step in fostering trust and helping to ensure the safety of our residents. The program also includes the integration of SMART 911 - a free private service that allows Suffolk County residents to create a profile to share with 911 call takers and first responders during an emergency - and crisis intervention training, further strengthening these vital relationships.

Looking ahead, we are thrilled about the upcoming Long Island Flutie 5K for Autism on October 5 at Belmont Lake State Park in West Babylon. Waive your registration fee and commit to fundraise $150 for Autism Communities. This professionally timed race is perfect for runners, walkers and rollers of all abilities and will help us to continue our mission. SPREAD THE WORD and let's come out together and run, walk or roll for what matters...a world where possibilities are endless!

In addition to these milestones, our residents continue to thrive, reaching significant personal milestones in their journeys. Leases are being renewed for another year and they are embracing greater independence and community involvement. Their achievements are a testament to the power of inclusive housing and supportive services, and we couldn't be more proud of them.

As we move into 2025, I am filled with optimism for what lies ahead. Together, we will continue building a community where everyone has the opportunity to live a full and meaningful life. Thank you for your continued support!

Warm regards,

Doreen Jaggs

A Home of His Own - Four Months Later

In our last newsletter over the summer, we shared Steven Niciforo's inspiring story as he took a significant step toward independence by moving into his first apartment. Four months later, Steven reflects on how he has adjusted to this new chapter of independence:

"In the beginning, the shift from living independently came with challenges, but it has been an incredible four months. I have been settling in and adjusting to my new surroundings and freedom. For the first time, I have come to the realization that I have complete control over my day-to-day life and it has been so exciting becoming part of the community here at North District Lofts. It is finally starting to feel like a home as I have gotten some new furniture and have decorated. I enjoy hosting my friends and family and it is so exciting and empowering to be able to have this level of independence. I enjoy everything to the fullest and cannot wait to see what my life here at North District Lofts has in store for me next! - Steven Niciforo

At Autism Communities, our commitment to our residents' growth and well-being is reflected in our services. Our dedicated staff makes regular liaison visits to ensure that residents like Steven are thriving, addressing their own challenges, and celebrating their progress. This ongoing support builds the foundation of what we see as a true community - one where inclusivity, empowerment and connection are at the heart of everything we do.

2nd Annual Nine & Dine Golf Outing

We could not have asked for a better day at Timber Point Golf Course for the 2nd Annual Nine & Dine Golf Outing on September 4th. Thanks to our amazing sponsors, supporters, and participants, we raised $75,000 to help us make a lasting impact on the community that we serve. Please watch this video from the day as we extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made this event possible. We look forward to seeing you next year as we continue to grow this annual event!

Friend Responders Initiative: Creating a Sustainable and Empowered Path for the Future

On August 27th, our residents and their families came together for an important milestone event in our Friend Responders Initiative, hosted at a Greenview Properties location. Representatives from the Bay Shore Fire Department and the Suffolk County Police Department, joined us for a dynamic open house focused on safety, preparedness, and community engagement.

The event kicked off with officers sharing the benefits of the SMART 9-1-1 program, a vital tool that allows first responders to access important information on each of our residents during emergencies. The officers also provided valuable safety tips, ensuring that residents know how to take proactive steps to stay safe in any situation.

The Bay Shore Fire Department continued the conversation by demonstrating essential safety equipment that should be in every home. From fire extinguishers to smoke alarms, the team explained how to use these devices and what steps to take in the event of a fire or medical emergency.

This open house was a meaningful opportunity to strengthen the relationship between our residents and local first responders. The next step in our initiative involves quarterly scheduled visits from Suffolk County police officers in the homes of our residents - fostering a deeper connection and understanding. By promoting safety and empowering our residents with knowledge, the Friend Responders Initiative continues to pave the way toward a more secure and supportive future for all.
