Inspiration for Autumn by Jean Wible

We’ve moved through the Fire of Summer and grounded ourselves in the Earth of Late Summer and now move into the Season of Autumn. This is a season of change and preparation with Lung and Intestines in focus.

Already, we can feel the change in the air to coolness that invites deep, cleansing breaths. Late season produce appears with warmth, spice, vegetables from earth and autumn fruits. It is a season for inspiration – literally in the breath and lungs – and symbolically in the invitation to change, let go and prepare.

Aim to increase inspiration in your life. Inspiration comes in many ways. We all may have some moments of great, large inspiration once or twice in a lifetime. One that changes our whole lives. But most inspiration comes from the small things we choose to pay attention to in daily life. As Fall moves in, look for your inspirations. Find ways to let go by decluttering, enjoy the colors of the season, prepare for winter by finding good books, music, foods – warm and filling, and ways to exercise indoors when the weather is bad.

This season invites us to simply breathe deep. Breathe in through your nose for a count of 4 while allowing your abdomen to expand fully. Hold that breath for a count of 7 while the pressure massages your lungs and belly. Blow out slowly through the mouth for a count of 8. Repeat 5-6 times several times a day. This pressure stimulates the Parasympathetic Nervous system and improves lung function, blood flow to the stomach and intestines and improves digestion and elimination.

Inspire Your Food

What is better than a great, warm soup with crusty bread to pamper ourselves as the nights get

colder throughout Fall and into Winter.

Soup is very easy to make – sautee onions and garlic with olive oil in a pot until it softens and

gets some color. Add any vegetables you want and heat through. Add stock (organic, low sodium

stocks are easy to buy) to cover and allow to simmer for 10-15 minutes. At this point, a regular

soup would add meat, noodles, rice, beans and seasoning, mix and enjoy. If you want a creamy

soup, add a ¼ cup of potato flakes to thicken, season and use a blender (hand blender/boat

blender) to create a smooth, creamy soup and enjoy!

If you can’t or don’t want to cook your own, here are a few options for purchase.

1. Amy’s: this brand is found in most grocery stores. Organic soups available in many

varieties from mushroom to chicken noodle, minestrone to tomato.

2. 18 Chestnuts: www.18chestnuts.com - has a great variety of soups that can be delivered.

3. Spoonful of Comfort: www.spoonfulofcomfort.com - these are sold as gift packages, but no reason you can’t buy it and pamper yourself!
